<p>For the sixth straight year, students will be working with the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help low- and moderate-income individuals and families prepare their taxes.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">The qualifying income bracket for participants is a gross income below $49,000, according to the IRS. Students from the College serve as VITA volunteers to increase their own tax preparation skills and teach community members how to file their own taxes.</p>
<p>“People we’ve helped come back year after year and entrust our students with this confidential information and can attest to their professionalism,” said Peggy J. Jenkins, assistant professor of accounting at SUNY Canton. “Our students are fully qualified and certified by the IRS to do this work and enjoy helping members of the community and giving back in this simple but critical way.”</p>
<p>Sessions are being held on SUNY Canton’s campus in Payson Hall Room 208 when the College is in session. Student volunteers are available through April 8<sup>th</sup> at the following times:</p>
<ul>
<li>Tuesdays – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.</li>
<li>Wednesdays – Noon to 6 p.m.</li>
<li>Thursdays – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.</li>
<li>Fridays – 9 a.m to 2 p.m.</li>
</ul>
<p>Appointments are strongly encouraged and are required for military and foreign student returns.</p>
<p>Individuals or families needing assistance must bring all W2 forms, the previous year’s tax returns and all other pertinent documents with them at the time of their appointment. <p>“We emphasize confidentiality and require a high-level of professionalism,” said Assistant Professor of Accounting Peggy J. Jenkins. “Our fully-qualified and IRS certified students have practiced their preparation skills and are ready to help. We are offering our services at more locations with the hopes of helping more people than ever before.”</p>

<p>Student volunteers will be available when the college is in session in Payson Hall Room 208 until April 8th at the following times:</p>
<ul>
<li>Mondays &#8211; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.</li>
<li>Tuesdays &#8211; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.</li>

</ul>
<p>Assistance will also be available off campus from:</p>

<li>10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, and Friday, March 12, at the Massena Unemployment Office.</li>

<p class="MsoNormal">SUNY Canton Accounting students are volunteering to help low- and moderate-income members of the North Country community prepare their taxes.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) created the <a href="http://canton.edu/vita/">Volunteer Income Tax Assistance</a> (VITA) program to help individuals and families prepare their taxes. This is the fourth year that SUNY Canton has participated in the program.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">“The students have really taken the lead with this program and they want to see it continue its success,” said Peggy Jenkins, Assistant Professor of Accounting. “They will be using their experiences with the VITA program to help prepare for their future careers.”</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The qualifying income bracket for participants is a gross income below $45,000, according to the IRS. Students from SUNY Canton serve as VITA volunteers to increase their own tax preparation skills and help community members learn to do their own taxes and help others file theirs in years to come. “Our students are well versed in both customer service and confidentiality,” Jenkins said.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Students will be available to assist with taxes on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. when the college is in session until April 15 in the SUNY Canton Accounting and Business Lab, Payson Hall Room 203.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">SUNY Canton offers a wide variety of career-driven bachelor&#8217;s, associate, and certificate programs, as well as three master&#8217;s degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. Most of SUNY Canton&#8217;s new four-year programs are designed so students can take them on-campus, online, or both. SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 100 courses online each semester. The college&#8217;s athletic teams belong to the NAIA&#8217;s Sunrise Conference, enabling students to compete in their respective sports for four years.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>SUNY Canton student volunteers are set to help prepare taxes for their peers and low- to moderate-income North Country residents.</p>
<p>For the third year, students from the School of Business and Public service will be assisting with tax preparation through the Internal Revenue Service&#8217;s (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The IRS created VITA to help taxpayers and their families who earn less than $39,000 complete their annual tax forms free of charge.</p>
<p>&#8220;:The VITA program has allowed us to offer our services to those who need it the most,&#8221;: said Peggy Jenkins, assistant professor of accounting and VITA program director. &#8220;:Our students also gain real-world tax preparation and valuable customer relation skills.&#8221;:</p>
<p>Volunteers will begin taking appointments beginning Thursday, Feb 8. Walk-ins will also be welcome from 9 to 11 a.m. each Thursday until taxes are due in Payson Room 203. The SUNY Canton Massena Education Center will also host walk-in slots from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at the St. Lawrence Centre Mall. <p>The following information should be brought to an appointment:</p>
<ul>
<li>This year&#8217;s tax package with all forms (W-2&#8242;s, 1099&#8242;s, etc).</li>
<li>Information for other income (taxable scholarships and grants).</li>
<li>Information for all deductions and credits (student loan interest, education credits).</li>
<li>A copy of last year&#8217;s tax return and a social security card.</li>
