SUNY Canton SBDC Seeks Agencies, Prime Contractors and Small Businesses for Matchmaking Event

The 2013 St. Lawrence County Matchmaker event will be held Thursday, Oct. 31, at SUNY Canton’s Richard W. Miller Campus Center. Hosted by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), North Country Procurement Technical Assistance Center and St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency, the event provides a great opportunity for agencies and prime contractors to support regional economic development by giving local businesses the opportunity to expand their client base and grow their businesses.

Matchmaker events are held around the country, but this is a first for St. Lawrence County. Matchmaking is like “speed-dating” — businesses will sign up for 10-minute meetings with purchasing officers and have a short time to network and share marketing materials. When the bell rings, the business moves to the next agency. The hope is that agencies will learn about what is available locally, and a potential match can be made between supplier and purchaser.

Small Business Development Center

Agencies currently signed up include New York Power Authority, SUNY Canton, SUNY Potsdam, Clarkson University, St. Lawrence University, St. Lawrence County Purchasing Department, the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. and the Village of Canton. Registration is free for prime agencies, contractors and purchasing officers, and is needed by Friday, Oct. 25.

Registration and meeting sign-up begins at 8 a.m., and the Matchmaker will begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon. Businesses looking to expand their markets and have one-on-one contact with purchasing officers can register for $10 by calling the SBDC office or through the event website registration form http://www.canton.edu/sbdc/matchmaker.html.

Pre-registration by Oct. 25 is encouraged. Pre-registered business participants will be given priority scheduling with purchasing officers at 8 a.m. Those who register the day of the event can enter the scheduling room at 8:20 a.m.

SUNY Canton to Hold Public Forum on Proposed Wind Turbine Project, July 17

The meeting will be the second in a series of public outreach efforts held by the College and its project partners.

SUNY Canton will host the second of three public informational sessions discussing a proposed wind turbine on the College campus beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, in Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Kingston Theater.

The public is encouraged to attend this free event. Refreshments will be served.

The College, in consultation with the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and Sustainable Energy Developments (SED), is considering the construction of a wind turbine that would provide electricity to the campus. The turbine would also advance educational opportunities for students, including those in the Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems and Electrical Engineering Technology programs.

A photo simulation created of the proposed wind turbine in its recommended location on SUNY Canton’s campus. The illustration was created by Sustainable Energy Developments for a visual study accompanying the project.

Following the previous outreach session, SED conducted numerous studies on the visual, acoustic, and archeological impacts of the proposed wind turbine on the campus and surrounding community.

Representatives from the SUNY Canton President’s Office, the Facilities and Planning Department, and the Public Relations Office will join NYPA and SED to answer questions about the project.

If the project is completed, SUNY Canton will be the only SUNY college or university with a 1.8 megawatt wind turbine on campus.

SUNY Canton will host the first of three public informational sessions discussing a proposed wind turbine on the College campus beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Intramural Gym.

The College openly invites the public, and refreshments will be served.

wind turbineThe College, in consultation with the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and Sustainable Energy Developments (SED), is considering the construction of a wind turbine that would provide electricity to the campus and provide support for academic programming, including Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems and Electrical Engineering Technology.

Representatives from SUNY Canton departments of Facilities and Planning and Public Relations will join Northland Associates, NYPA and SED to answer questions about the scope, purpose and outcomes of the proposed project. Additionally, Michael J. Newtown, Interim Dean of the School of Engineering Technology will speak about the educational benefits of having a wind turbine on campus.

From 2 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, two balloons will be floated at the proposed wind turbine location on campus to show its scale. The balloons will be representing the maximum height of the structure at the tip of a blade extending vertically, the other representing the position of the center of the blades. If weather conditions prohibit the balloon float on the 16th, the balloons will be floated at another time, according to SED.
