Arthur Greenberg, Ph.D., a chemistry professor at the University of New Hampshire, will be presenting “The Privilege of a Joyful Career” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 29, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Kingston Theater. Greenberg authored From Alchemy to Chemistry in Picture and Story, a light-hearted overview of the history of chemistry including its transition from the pseudo-science days of converting lead into gold.

“Chemistry’s history is really fascinating,” Greenberg said. “Looking at it historically, you get a feeling for how chemistry went from this spiritual way of trying to make sense of nature to becoming a science.”

After Greenberg’s guest lecture, students and faculty will be making a series of presentations on research they’ve conducted during the past year in the Woodcock Conference Suites. There will also be artwork on display by students in the Graphic and Multimedia Design program. The Scholarly Activities Celebration continues with a poster presentation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 30, in the Southworth Library.

“Dr. Greenberg has made a career doing what he loves,” noted Scholarly Activities Celebration Chair Jeffrey Taylor, who is also an assistant professor of biology at SUNY Canton. “Our students can learn from his ability to find a path best suiting his interests and passion. He’s also found a way to share his enthusiasm for a given subject matter in a way that resonates with everyone.”

Greenberg is a 1967 graduate of Farleigh Dickinson University, where he received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry, while both his Master’s and Ph.D. are from Princeton University. He has worked as a faculty member at Forstburg State College, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University. He was the chemistry department chair at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte before becoming the Dean of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of New Hampshire.

Greenberg’s research has focused on organic and environmental organic chemistry. He has published over 120 papers and chapters, authored and co-authored five books and edited 19 others.

The Scholarly Activities Celebration highlights the work of SUNY Canton students and faculty. Students will have the opportunity to present their research and have the chance to win one of several $100 prizes. Last year’s celebration had more than 100 presentations, ranging from art and design projects to poster presentations detailing the latest advancements in the engineering technology fields.
