SUNY Canton Receives Grant to Continue Exceptional Student Support Services

Monday, July 20th, 2015

The U.S. Department of Education announced that SUNY Canton has been selected to receive nearly $260,000 to continue its federally funded TRiO Student Support Services program.

The funding will cover the next year of operation for the college’s TRiO programs and will likely continue for a total of five years.

“This federally-funded grant will help us ensure that students have the means not just to attend college, but to succeed,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “By removing financial and other barriers, students can truly reach their potential both in college and beyond.”

The college’s efforts help more than 200 first-generation economically disadvantaged students access special services, including academic counseling, tutoring and other resources to enhance their college experience. The goal of the program is to increase college retention and graduation rates.

The funding was awarded following a competitive grant application process. The college demonstrated effectiveness and met federally mandated criteria with its successful student support initiatives.

Congressional Representative Elise Stefanik issued a statement Friday, July 17, applauding the U.S. Department of Education for awarding grants to colleges and universities within New York’s 21st district. She said, “As a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, ensuring that our students have an opportunity to achieve a college degree is a top priority of mine in Congress, and I know these grants will go a long way to helping students succeed.”

SUNY Canton’s Academic Support Services department recently received a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The funding will be used for the Student Support Services (SSS) program, a federally-funded TRiO program that works with over 200 SUNY Canton students annually.

“The program contributes in a major way to the retention efforts of SUNY Canton,” said Patricia M. Cassara, director of academic support services and the TRiO SSS program. “Students within the program are followed throughout their college career. We help students overcome obstacles and reach their educational goals, we provide academic support, and we encourage them to be the best student they can be.”

The SSS program provides a number of services including:

  • information and resources to enhance collegiate success;
  • professional tutoring;
  • academic counseling; and
  • scholarship opportunities.

In addition, the TRiO SSS Program offers the opportunity to belong to Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society.
