Noted African-American Poet To Speak at SUNY Canton

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

Tyrone WilliamsA poet who challenges and investigates language, history and race will kick off the spring installment of SUNY Canton’s Living Writers Series.

Tyrone Williams will speak at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Kingston Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

Williams’ literary career has spanned nearly 30 years. He is the author of a number of books including “Convalescence” (1987), “Futures, Elections” (2004) and “Pink Tie” (2011).

“I don’t ‘revere’ the English language but I use it and, on occasion, abuse it,” Williams said in an interview. “Every grammatical marker is purposeful … every torque of the language renders ‘meaning’ problematic — which seems to me the precise ‘condition’ of African-American existence in particular and ‘American’ life in general.”

Williams is the editor of “African American Literature: Revised Edition” (2008). He teaches at Xavier University in Cincinnati.

Now in its second year, the Living Writers Series was created by SUNY Canton Assistant Professor of English Phil K. LaMarche to correspond with his Living Writers Course. Students enrolled in the class read the books by the authors scheduled to visit the College. Williams’ visit is just one of the many activities commemorating Black History Month.

Future guest speakers this spring will be author Jennifer Pashley March 26 and New York Times bestselling author George Saunders April 23. For more information on past and upcoming speakers, visit http://www.canton.edu/writers/.
