The Wounded Warrior Project will be holding a Sled Hockey Tournament starting on Friday at SUNY Canton. It will be the second time that the organization has used the College’s facilities.
The matches will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, March 14, at the Convocation Athletic and Recreation Center, nicknamed Roos House. Games will follow at 6 and 8 p.m. and will continue throughout the day on Saturday, March 15. A championship match will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 16.
Instead of traditional skates, players use a specially made sled, or sledge, to sit on and glide across the ice. They propel themselves using two small hockey sticks. The extra equipment allows veterans who are missing limbs, or are otherwise disabled, to compete.
The tournament is sponsored by the Society for American Military Engineers and the Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1231.
Donations will be accepted at the door and there will also be a 50/50 raffle and chuck-a-puck. Memorabilia from the National Hockey League will be raffled off and sold during a silent auction.
