Technology Requirements for Taking Online Courses


Small logo A computer with access to the Internet

  • Operating System: Windows 2000 or Windows XP or Macintosh OS X.3
  • Hardware: 256 MB of RAM, 1GB free hard disk space
  • Connection to the internet (broadband connection, such as RoadRunner or DSL, is preferred; dial-up users should read additional information)
  • Software: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint (or Powerpoint Viewer), Adobe Acrobat Reader. Some course content may require additional software.
  • Browser:
    • Internet Explorer 6 or higher for Windows
    • Internet Explorer 5.2 or Safari 1.2 for Macintosh

Small logo Note: Cookies must be enabled for Blackboard to function correctly. Some people do not permit cookies on their computer, but Blackboard needs to set what's called a "Session" cookie in order to work. You will not be able to log onto the system until you permit Blackboard to set that cookie.

Small logo To permit cookies in Internet Explorer:

  1. Go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
  2. Click on the Privacy Tab. The privacy must be set to "Medium" or lower in order for Blackboard to work.
  3. Click on Ok to save the changes.
  4. Quit Internet Explorer.

Power Pooint Logo PowerPoint Viewer 97 (2002 Release)
View PowerPoint 97, 2000, and 2002 presentations. You only need this viewer if you do not already have PowePoint on your computer.

Microsoft Word Logo Word 97/2000 Viewer (Windows 95/98/NT)
Microsoft Word users can share documents with those who do not have Word and users without Word can open and view Word documents. You only need this viewer if you do not already have Microsoft Word on your computer.

The Works 6.0 Converter allows you to convert word processor documents created in Microsoft Works 6.0 to Microsoft Word and other Works programs. Specifically, this converter works with Works 2000, 4.5, and 4.x, and Word 2002, 2000, and 97.
