Orientation Leaders

Orientation Leaders (OL’s) are responsible for assisting new students in their transition to SUNY Canton. This is an opportunity for you to learn, serve, and grow by working with faculty, staff, incoming students and their families to welcomes the incoming class. As such, OL’s need to be positive role models.

Orientation Leaders


  • Potential OL’s should be prepared for a group process interview. 
  • Be prompt and responsible in returning emails or messages. 
  • Provide a welcoming and positive presence to all new students, families, and visitors
  • Ability to problem solve, manage conflict, and remain flexible under pressure.
  • Possess maturity, reliability, flexibility, initiative, motivation, enthusiasm, school spirit and an open mind.
  • Ability to work under varying levels and types of supervision.
  • Exhibit leadership, commitment to the University’s mission, strong customer service skills and a passion for helping others.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations (faculty, staff, students, family members, etc.).
  • Willingness to lead some information sessions – particularly group panels and computing information sessions.
  • Able to use campus computers, UCanWeb, Angel and student email and teach new students how to use them
  • Willingness to participate in, and sometimes lead, activities that are intended to assist new students in getting to know each other (ice-breaker type activities). 

In 2013, we will have three separate orientation sessions and are hiring two groups of OL's:

  • One group will be asked to be available from August 8th through August 25
  • Additional OL's will be needed for Opening Week (August 19-25)
  • All OL's should be prepared for long hours during the Orientation sessions


The benefits include: meeting new people and having fun, leadership training, and housing during OL training and Orientation. Stipend start at $250 and increase according to group selection and the amount of time you are asked to commit. OL's who show are willing to go above and beyond the minimum may be eligible for a bonus.

Minimum Requirements (all applicants must meet the following):

  • Be a full-time student and have completed 12 credit hours at SUNY Canton.
  • Be in good academic and judicial standing during application and throughout their tenure.  A student may not hold the Orientation Leader position while on academic or disciplinary probation.
  • Exhibit leadership, commitment to the mission of Orientation and SUNY Canton, strong customer service skills and a passion for helping others.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations (faculty, staff, students, family members, etc.).
  • Interpersonal communication skills; the capacity to listen and respond to individuals’ questions and concerns; the ability to help others problem-solve and make decisions.
