Online LearningSmall logo SUNY Canton Releases New OL Web Pages SUNY Canton has revamped the look and feel of the SUNY Canton OnLine (SUNY Canton OL) web pages. “For many future SUNY Canton students, the OL page is the first point of contact with the college,” noted Molly Mott, Dean of Academic Services and Retention. “It is important that we maintain a site that is both user-friendly and attractive.” During the Fall 2008 Semester more than 1150 students were taking at least one of the College’s 104 online courses through SUNY Canton OL, and approximately 285 students were taking courses online only. ...Full Story

Math Profs Write Student-Friendly Textbook Two North Country college professors adopted a student-oriented, conversational writing style and integrated real world applications when they wrote their newly-published book on Linear Algebra. McGraw Hill recently published “Introduction to Linear Algebra with Applications” by Daniel J. Gagliardi, assistant professor of mathematics at SUNY Canton and James DeFranza, professor of mathematics, computer science, and statistics at St. Lawrence University. SUNY Canton Veterans Association Announces Ceremonial Flagpole The newly-formed SUNY Canton Veterans Association has helped bring a new ceremonial flagpole to the college. "The flagpole was a natural project for the association," said Robert L. Edwards, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Veterans Association advisor. "We worked with the David Sullivan St Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy, the SUNY Canton Criminal Justice Association, and the SUNY Canton Foundation to place this monument at the side entrance of Payson Hall." World War II Veterans to Return for Commencement Sixty-five years ago, Clarence "Cal" Hansen was required to leave college just weeks before his graduation to go fight in World War II. Next weekend, he is returning to Canton from South Dakota to attend the Commencement he was forced to miss in 1943. At its upcoming Commencement, SUNY Canton will be honoring all of its World War II veterans that left College to serve their country and didn't get the opportunity to experience their graduation. She earned a Criminal Justice associate degree from SUNY Canton in 1993, a master of arts in Speech from Kansas State University in 2002, and a master of arts in Education from Citadel Military College in 2003. She said she decided to seek a career in law enforcement after her U.S. military service. Criminal Justice was the most popular major among graduates with 108 students receiving their associate degree in that field. Seventy-five graduates received associate degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences: General Studies, making it the second most popular major, followed by Nursing with 69 students and Business Administration with 62 graduates. The most bachelor's degrees were awarded in Criminal Investigation. It was the fifth most popular major overall with 60 graduates. The Maresca Family Challenge is designed to create a circle of giving and inspire others to do the same. The Marescas committed to making a minimum gift of $100,000 to establish the Dr. Michael and Barbara Maresca Family Endowment for Nursing Education. An extraordinary increase in the number of online courses highlights the upcoming Summer Session at SUNY Canton. Registration for courses begins this Monday, April 16. SUNY Canton student volunteers are set to help prepare taxes for their peers and low- to moderate-income North Country residents. For the third year, students from the School of Business and Public service will be assisting with tax preparation through the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The IRS created VITA to help taxpayers and their families who earn less than $39,000 complete their annual tax forms free of charge. The David Sullivan St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy at SUNY Canton recently received $1,000 from the Institute for Ethical Behavior, Inc. The donation will be used to purchase learning materials related to the study of ethics for cadets enrolled in the academy as well as SUNY Canton's four-year Criminal Investigation and two-year Criminal Justice programs, according to Academy Director Steven L.
