AIDS Quilt Visits SUNY Canton
Millions of lives have been touched by the message of the thousands of panels creating the AIDS Quilt.
SUNY Canton has been displaying a portion of AIDS Quilt all week at the Intramural Gym in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center. Additionally, AIDS Quilt founder and Gay rights activist Cleve Jones presented "AIDS: A War Worth Fighting" on Tuesday. The AIDS Quilt will remain on display until 2 p.m. Friday.
"The AIDS Quilt presentation gave us a moment to reflect on a personal level," said Daniel J. Sweeney, Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students. "This monumental display and its corresponding presentations served as a prompt for cure advocacy and a precautionary reminder that HIV and AIDS remains a significant health risk."
The AIDS Quilt display is sponsored by the Student Cooperative Alliance, the Student Activities Office, and the Student Affairs Office.
Since its creation, the AIDS Memorial Quilt has evolved as one of the most recognized symbols in the fight against AIDS and stands as the largest piece of community folk art in the world. The Quilt now weighs over 54 tons and is comprised of more than 47,000 panels dedicated to more than 88,000 individuals who have died from AIDS. If placed end-to-end, all of the panels of the Quilt would fill more than 30 football fields.
The NAMES Project Foundation, Inc., is the international, non-government organization that is the sponsor of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The mission of the NAMES Project Foundation, which has 22 chapters, is to preserve, care for, and use the AIDS Memorial Quilt to foster healing, heighten awareness and inspire action in the struggle against HIV and AIDS.
