SUNY Canton Student Programmer Lauded
for Dispelling Digital Riff-Raff

Pictured are (from left) Andrew Anderson of St. Regis Falls and SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. Anderson was recently rewarded with a SUNY Canton mug containing various goodies for his hard work keeping viruses and unsecured personal computers off the College's network.
A SUNY Canton Information Services Help Desk Assistant was the recent recipient of a "mugging," for single-handedly creating a system that protects the College’s network from virus-laden mobile computers, SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy recently announced.
Andrew Anderson of St. Regis Falls, is in his senior year of the College's Computer Information Systems baccalaureate program. Anderson also works at the Information Services Help Desk. Approximately three weeks before the semester began, he was charged with the daunting task of creating a piece of software to protect the College network against any potential viruses students may have brought with them on wireless-access personal computers, according to Theresa Corbine, Help Desk Manager.
"Andrew has incredible technical skills in the areas of PC hardware and software, networking, web development, and programming," Corbine said. "He stepped up to the plate this past summer when during the final hour, he created a program for incoming students to register their wireless network devices before they were allowed on the network."
Using open-source software, Anderson tailored an application that would check a computer for corruption, make certain that a computer had up-to-date virus protection, and block access to the network if it failed either of the two criteria. "His hard work and dedication under immense pressure has truly paid off for the campus." Corbine said. "Drew not only has the respect of all of his peers, he also has the respect of every Information Services team member."
Muggings are one of the ways that President Kennedy personally rewards those who exceed expectations at the College. Recipients are caught unaware when the President stops by with a SUNY Canton mug filled with goodies.
