SUNY Canton's Alpha Theta Gamma Fraternity
Lauded for Service
The SUNY Canton Alpha Chapter of the Theta Gamma Fraternity was recently awarded for their outstanding community service for helping a Northern New York disabled veteran renovate his home.
The members of Theta Gamma received the 2005 Student Initiative Award from the Association of Council Members and College Trustees of SUNY presented Saturday, Oct. 29, in Lake George, according to Ray C. Barney, Theta Gamma Advisor and Director of the College Association Campus Center Store.
"The brothers of Theta Gammas have a long standing tradition of community service," said Barney. "These young men have made themselves good neighbors and active members of the community. They have truly set a fine example for future fraternity members to follow."
Approximately one year ago, the fraternity members assisted a disabled war veteran in the Northern New York area with renovations to his house. The gentleman, who requested anonymity, learned that his home needed repair before the winter months. He was not physically able to do the work himself, so members of the fraternity spent two weekends doing demolition tasks and cleaning to prepare the house for inspection.
The veteran was able to renovate his house, and the Theta Gamma brothers took pride in assisting someone who had put his life on the line to defend their freedom, said Daniel J. Sweeney, SUNY Canton Vice President for Student Affairs.
George Bull, President of Theta Gamma and a SUNY Canton Criminal Investigation major from Scotia said that he and other Theta Gamma Fraternity members were pleased with the results of their efforts. "We are always willing to help," said Bull who received the award on behalf of the fraternity. "Sometimes neighbors stop by and ask us to move heavy things."
Theta Gamma members have recently been involved with other community and College events including, the Run for Relief, where they ran around the Canton Village park to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims, SUNY Canton's Golden Opportunity Nights, and the Phantoms in the Park Halloween celebration.
Theta Gamma has been an active SUNY Canton fraternity for over 90 years, whose members are housed in the Payson Mansion at 53 Court Street, Canton.
SUNY Canton will be marking its 100-year anniversary next year and has already begun celebrating with its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. The College is transitioning from a two-year institution to a four-year College. In addition to 25 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers eight four-year degrees with plans to double that number during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers a Masters of Business Administration in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
