SUNY Canton Prepares For Another Year of Growth
The 2005-06 semesters at SUNY Canton will bring unsurpassed growth for students, faculty, and staff according to SUNY Canton Provost Jeremy D. Brown.
"Enrollment projections put us at over 3000 students in 2010," said Brown. "In Fall 2006, we will offer double the number of baccalaureate programs and by Fall 2010, we will offer an estimated 20 baccalaureate programs."
Brown said other college-wide goals for the upcoming year include continuing the education and professional development of faculty and staff, working with the State University of New York to create a master degree program, and establishing satellite sites in high-population communities.
Enrollment
Projections indicate a 13 percent increase in enrollment for Fall 2005. Over 3200 total applications have been received for the Fall 2005 semester, with over 800 freshmen beginning classes on August 30, according to SUNY Canton Director of Admissions Jodi L. Revill. Students are allowed to apply for admittance as late as September 1, so total numbers may exceed estimates. There will also be a last-minute orientation for students and parents, scheduled for the Saturday before school begins on August 28.
Newest Baccalaureate Degree
One of the popular programs at SUNY Canton this year is the School of Business and Public Service's new Bachelor of Business Administration in Technology Management. This program trains potential managers to recognize the missing links between management and technicians within today's high-tech leading employment industries. "We are also contemplating the implementation of other related programs such as Emergency and Disaster Management, Engineering Technology Management, and Law Enforcement and Leadership Management," Brown said.
SUNY Canton School of Business and Public Service Dean, Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, said there are about a dozen Technology Management programs in the United States, most of which are not offered at the undergraduate level. "This is one of a unique set of programs that will integrate aspects of the programs already offered by SUNY Canton and prepare students for high-tech positions within leading industries," Gueverra said. "It will prepare students to further integrate and implement technology into the workplace."

New Food
This year, several new food concessions will be available to stimulate appetites, according to SUNY Canton College Association Food Director Susan D. Law. The Campus Center Atrium will house the Serendipity Café, Healthy food for Healthy Minds. "Serendipity will serve low-carbohydrate and low-fat food options," Law said.
Last year, the Cyber Café, located at the Southworth Library, was unveiled. The Cyber Café brews Starbucks coffee, espresso drinks, and serves bagels, sandwiches, salads and snacks. Another 2005 addition was the Casa Solana, which serves Mexican food including tacos, enchiladas and burritos.
The addition of the Serendipity Café makes six different food operations on campus, double the amount of options students had in 2003. Chaney Dining Center will also be adding an Asian kiosk to add even more diversity for daily meals.
Law noted that there was an additional off-campus eatery to consider this year as well. "Anyone with a Northstar Account or Advantage Plan can use their College identification cards to purchase food from the new Domino's Pizza," Law said. The participating Domino's Pizza is located with the Mobil Station and Dunkin' Donuts currently under construction on Main Street, Canton.
Student Activities
As part of a long-standing tradition, SUNY Canton student government officials and members of the SUNY Canton Greek organizations help incoming students unload their gear and assist with the moving-in process. Select SUNY Canton student government members are invited to come back early and attend workshops and seminars to help them prepare for their responsibilities throughout the semester, according to SUNY Canton Director of Student Activities Scott Quinell. The year's first "Golden Opportunity Night" will be held on September 2, to provide students with a safe and fun alternative to the bar scene, while giving them an opportunity to increase their leadership skills.
Members of the SUNY Canton Student government aren't going to be the only ones coming back to school early, members of the SUNY Canton Men's and Women's Soccer Teams will also be coming back to school on August 24 to prepare for their first games scheduled for Saturday, September 3.
Preparations for the Family and Community Weekend are also in full swing. Events will begin Friday, September 23 and run through Sunday, September 25. This year's events include several musical venues running through the duration of the weekend and a craft fair and Admissions Open House on Saturday, September 24.
