100 Years, 12 Four-Year Programs, and SUNY Canton Continues to Grow
Ongoing collegiate development along with the addition of more new four-year degrees have made SUNY Canton's one-hundredth year a benchmark of success in the college's history.
"We've added four new baccalaureate degrees during the past academic year," said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. "We hope to add at least four more in the next year, making a total of 16 four-year programs that will allow even more career options for our graduates."
During the past academic year, SUNY Canton added (in order of newest to oldest) Law Enforcement and Leadership Management, Legal Studies, Alternative and Renewable Energy Applications, and Emergency and Disaster Management.
Baccalaureate degrees slated to begin over the next year include Industrial Technology Management, a four-year Nursing program, Information Technology, and a four-year Dental Hygiene program. These program proposals are currently going through the review process.
Students have also enjoyed a year of SUNYIT's Master of Business Administration (MBA) program offered locally through distance learning and online course correspondence. Following in that success, SUNYIT and SUNY Canton are offering Master of Science degrees in Accountancy and Health Services Administration.
Bigger, Better, and more Beautiful
Students joining the college for their four-year education this fall will see a multitude of cross-campus improvements by the time they graduate in 2010. Most notably will be the construction of the college's $18 million Athletic and Convocation Center, which will pave the way for the continued development of the college's four-year athletic programs.
The facility will have basketball courts, a field house, and an ice rink that will provide the 15-time NJCAA national championship Men's Hockey Team an on-campus home-ice advantage. It will also house SUNY Canton's fitness center and provide increased space for activities such as concerts, graduation ceremonies, trade shows, and other community-oriented events.
That's My…
More than 1,000 full-time freshman and new students will be saying "That's My SUNY Canton" this fall, with a total overall estimate of over 2600 students attending the college. SUNY Canton has rolling admissions, which allow students to sign up for college until classes begin Tuesday, August 29. For more information, contact the Office of Admissions at 386-7123.
Vibrant Campus Activities
The Student Activities office will continue to add to the life and action of the campus with a new line up of student events and entertainment during the 2006-2007 academic year. Upcoming events include Fall Fest and Family Weekend, held all day Saturday, September 30 at locations in around the Miller Campus Center. Events include exhibitions, games, and a craft show.
Some of the fun events last year according to current students were a SUNY Canton version of the popular "American Idol," a Comedy Concert with comedians from Saturday Night Live and BET, and a visit by Apollo 12 Astronaut Captain Alan Bean.
The Student Activities Office also holds Golden Opportunity Nights which provide safe and fun entertainment options while promoting leadership and professional development.
Flexible and Convenient
Not only is SUNY Canton increasing its number of majors, it is also continually expanding the method of instruction for its academic options. Ten of the 12 four-year programs are currently online. Online students can courses from other locations and have the flexibility to schedule around their careers or other activities.
SUNY Canton has been offering its signature programs to colleges and universities both domestically and abroad. During the summer months, Kennedy and Provost Jeremy D. Brown helped create special agreements with Massachusetts' Massasoit Community College and Wyoming's Gillette College allowing students to obtain four-year SUNY Canton degrees from their respective states and colleges.
New Tools, Technology, and Toys
SUNY Canton recently received more than $437, 500 in Vocational and Technical Education Act (VATEA) grant funds to enhance existing technology programs and implement new academic initiatives for other programs. "A portion of the VATEA funding will be used to enhance our tutoring efforts in the Academic Support Services, Nursing, and Accounting labs," said Grants Coordinator Joanne Fassinger. "This will be accomplished through the addition of new computers and learning software specific for each curriculum."
Other high-tech additions include a new HAAS computer-controlled milling machine and heat treatment furnace for Mechanical Engineering Technology Students; and a Topcon Geographic Information System, which will allow Civil Engineering Technology students access to innovative positioning technologies to design new buildings or structures.
