Small logo Batter Up! Baseball in American Society is among the unique courses offered during SUNY Canton’s Online Winterterm Semester.

Students in Baseball in American Society will examine the historical impact that baseball has had on economic, social and cultural issues in America. Main themes of the course include race, gender, labor, and immigration and how they fit into the progression of American society, according to course instructor Summer Hahn.

“I show various historical situations using the game of baseball instead of a conventional timeline,” said Hahn. “We discuss how baseball became what it is today and show how the game pertains to what was happening during corresponding times in U.S. history.”

Hahn said that the game has survived ups and downs that are mirrored by the transitional highs and lows of U.S. History.

Hahn’s course will join many other unique or original courses, including Celtic Legends and Native American Literature during the three-and-a-half week online Winterterm semester. Online Winterterm courses provide a way for students to get ahead in their studies, ease workloads for future semesters, or catch up if they’ve fallen behind.

The courses also provide opportunities for working professionals to gain professional development and continuing education while maintaining their workday schedule.

Last year, faculty members were thrilled with the number of students and the geographic diversity of those enrolled in Winterterm courses. More than 150 students participated in Winterterm last year, SUNY Canton’s first Online Winterterm offering. Students that enrolled included several out-of-state students and even military personnel serving overseas. Registration for Winterterm begins Monday Nov. 6. Students are encouraged to sign up early to ensure their spot in classes.

Winterterm online courses begin Tuesday, Dec. 26 and conclude Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2007. For a complete list of courses, or to download registration forms, visit www.canton.edu/winterterm. For more information, contact the SUNY Canton Student Service Center at 315-386-7616, finaid@canton.edu.

SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 22 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 12 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
