As SUNY Canton enters its Centennial Celebration, the Office of Institutional Advancement decided that it was time to research where the college has been while developing its future. The State University of New York at Canton chronicles the history of the college and documents the College's movement to a four-year institution.
"There are some lessons to be learned from the State University of New York at Canton's History," said Welch "One of those lessons is that that there is an enduring quality to the institution. Despite changes in location, curriculum, and mission, the college has remained part of the region's fabric for over 100 years."
Welch said that the "enduring quality" is seen in the appreciation of the College experience shared among the generations of graduates from SUNY Canton, Canton College of Technology or Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute. Students today commonly find inspiration among the College's Alumni and Emeriti.
The book was compiled after painstaking research into the archives of SUNY Canton, St. Lawrence University, the St. Lawrence Historical Society, and the personal photo collections of past and current students. Over 200 vintage and new photographs of the campus buildings and Canton Village fill the pages of this publication, most of which have never been published before. Welch also augmented the book's historic photos with new images, to ensure the book was as up to date as possible. "When writing about the recent past, being too close to the events is always a concern, but I tried to find pictures that illustrated familiar themes from the college's past," Welch said.
Buildings are only a fraction of the story behind SUNY Canton. The book also highlights past members of the faculty, staff, student body, and community who were integral to college's growth and success. Dr. James Payson, Lottie Southworth, Professor Emeritus Harry King, Professor Emeritus Richard Miller, and influential alumni including Joel Canino of Gemma Power Systems in Glastonbury, Conn., all have a place in the pages of the College's history.
Student life and activities are also an important part of the history of the college history. Welch has unearthed photos of Greek organizations, winter carnivals, raft races, and commencement ceremonies.
Welch received his Bachelor of Arts from the College of Wooster, Ohio, and a Master of Library Sciences from SUNY Albany. He has been previously written an introduction for two reprints of the North Country classic Eben Holden by Irving Bacheller, and compiled Adirondack Books 1966 to 1992: an Annotated Bibliography, published by North Country Books in 1994.
