SUNY Canton Steel Bridge Team Finishes
Second in National Championships

SECOND PLACE NATIONALLY - The SUNY Canton American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Steel Bridge Team Members, (from left) back row, Faculty Advisors Paul D. Hitchman and Robert R. The SUNY Canton American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Steel Bridge Team, a student club took second place at the recent National Championships in Salt Lake City.
"We are ecstatic that our students performed at such a high level and finished better than ever before in the history of the team," said Paul D. Hitchman, Faculty advisor for the Student Club "The students scored first in assembly speed, tied for first in stiffness, second in efficiency, and fifth in economy."
Almost 500 students from 45 colleges and universities built scale-model bridges during the 15th Annual National Student Steel Bridge Competition on Friday, May 26 and Saturday, May 27, in Salt Lake City, Utah. North Dakota State University was the only team to beat SUNY Canton after a penalty for dropping a bolt during the assembly phase of the competition, according to Hitchman.
The top 10 colleges and universities listed in order of rank are: North Dakota State University, SUNY Canton, University of Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Lakehead University, Clemson University, University of California, San Diego, California State University, University of California, Davis, and Lawrence Technological University.
"We would like to thank our main sponsor, Jeffords Steel and Engineering Company of Potsdam," Hitchman said. "We'd also like to thank the SUNY Canton College Foundation, as well as the numerous faculty, staff, alumni, and corporations who contributed the funding that made our success possible."
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 26 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 10 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. The College has recently embarked upon articulation agreements with Lomonosov Moscow State University and Osaka College of Foreign Languages and International Business in Japan, allowing international scholars the ability to obtain a SUNY Canton degree locally or abroad.
