SUNY Canton Responds to Neighbors’ Townhouse Concerns
In response to concerns voiced by members of the Canton community, SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy today announced the college will not move forward with a proposed plan to build student townhouses at the properties located at 5 Fairlane Drive and 74 Riverside Drive in the village.
"We looked into several options regarding those properties," Kennedy said, "but ultimately we were swayed by the sentiment of our neighbors. I'd like for them to know that we heard their concerns and we are sensitive to their wishes. I would also like to commend the College Association, its Board of Directors and its Executive Director Mike Perry for recognizing the importance of being good neighbors and caring members of the community."
As a result of the decision not to move forward with the proposed student townhouses, the College Association Board of Directors agreed to offer the properties for sale to the Canton community. Karen McAuliffe of County Seat Realty in Canton will serve as the exclusive agent to negotiate the sale of the properties. She can be contacted at 315-386-5400 or karencountys@verizon.net.
SUNY Canton will be marking its 100-year anniversary next year and has already begun celebrating with its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. The college is transitioning from a two-year institution to a four-year college. In addition to 25 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers eight four-year degrees with plans to double that number during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers a Masters of Business Administration in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
