SUNY Canton Reports Highest Enrollment in 16 Years
SUNY Canton's Fall 2006 enrollment has reached a 16-year highpoint.
To date, 2,618 students have enrolled, the highest total since the 1990-91 academic year and the fourth highest enrollment figure in the college's history.
"The growth in our enrollment numbers is easily attributed to the growth of our bachelor's degree programs and online programs," President Joseph L. Kennedy said. "We're pleased to see a higher-than-anticipated number of transfer, continuing and returning students. Students are not only transferring here from other two- and four-year schools, current students are also deciding to stay here to obtain their bachelor's degrees."
SUNY Canton now offers 12 bachelor's degree programs and continues to expand its academic offerings.
"Our enrollment will continue to increase as students stay here to obtain their four-year degrees," said Director of Admissions Jodi Revill. "We are no longer just a two-year college. That will become increasingly important as the number of high school graduates across the state continues to decline over the next several years."
During the 1990-91 academic year, 2,662 students enrolled in classes. It was the third highest total in the college's history. The highest enrollment occurred in 1975-76 when 2,833 students were registered. The second highest total was recorded in fall of 1981-82 with 2,704 students.
This year's figure represents an increase of 110 students from last year's total of 2,508 and marks just the second time in the last 23 years that the college has surpassed 2,600 students.
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 22 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 12 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
