SUNY Canton Plans Dental Hygiene Program
SUNY Canton Provost Dr. Jeremy Brown announced today that plans for the college's Dental Hygiene program with Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica continue to progress in anticipation of classes beginning as soon as possible pending approval.
"Once approved by SUNY and the State Education Department, we expect to offer a high-quality Dental Hygiene program in collaboration with our colleagues at Mohawk Valley Community College. This program will complement well our existing two-year program in health-related fields such as Occupational Therapist Assistant, Nursing and Physical Therapist Assistant," Brown said.
The lecture portions of the curriculum will be taught at Mohawk Valley Community College campus. Brown said that the program announcement has been completed, and he is putting the finishing touches on the Program Proposal, which will be submitted with SUNY Administration in Albany, possibly by Thanksgiving.
"We already have all of the two-year classes developed, and we have accreditation from the American Dental Association," said Linda Pellett, Dean of the SUNY Canton School of Science, Health, and Professional Studies. "We are also developing a four-year Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Technology degree in Dental Hygiene."
Earlier this year, SUNY Canton hired Pamela Quinn as Dental Hygiene Program Director. "Pam is organizing all of the necessary steps for this program," Pellett said.
Pellett and Quinn are spearheading the development of online classes so that the Dental Hygiene curriculum can be accessed by a greater number of students without relocating or commuting. "There is a great need for this program," said Pellett. "We expect that this program will be operating at full capacity as soon as classes begin."
Quinn recently worked as an Associate Vice President for Academic Services and Assistant Professor and Department Chairperson for Dental Hygiene at Onondaga Community College. Quinn also worked as a full-time adjunct for Broome Community College and has had many years of dental hygiene clinical experience.
"The baccalaureate degree program would be only the second in the State," Brown added. "As such, we hope to help in meeting the tremendous demand for dental hygienists in the area. Along with our formal degree programs, we expect to offer continuing education opportunities of the same quality and caliber to current dental hygienists."
