SUNY Canton Dental Hygiene Information Session,
December 15
SUNY Canton will be holding an information session for prospective students interested in its Dental Hygiene program in Rome, N.Y. Students are invited to attend presentations beginning at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at the Plumley Complex on the Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) Rome Campus. Tours of the new Dental Hygiene Clinic at the Veterans' Association Outpatient Facility will begin following the presentations at the MVCC Campus.
The information session is free and open to the public and is designed for students who are interested in enrolling in the two-year Dental Hygiene program. Pre-registration is required. To pre-register, or for more information, contact the SUNY Canton Office of Admissions at 800-388-7123, or email admissions@canton.edu.
The Dental Hygiene Clinic, jointly-run with MVCC, recently celebrated its grand-opening. Twenty-fourth District Congressman Sherwood Boehlert joined SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy, Provost Jeremy D. Brown and MVCC President Michael Schafer for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the VA Outpatient Facility in Rome. Members of the Veterans' Administration, officials from the Fifth District Dental Society, and the Oneida Dental Society were also on hand to commemorate the collaborative endeavor.
SUNY Canton has submitted a proposal for an online Dental Hygiene bachelor's degree, designed to be completed following the two-year curriculum. That program is expected to begin next fall.
Like many of SUNY Canton's signature programs, Dental Hygiene is a career-driven educational opportunity designed to lead directly to post-graduate employment. Currently, there is a significant need for qualified dental hygienists in New York State and the nation. The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates dental hygienists held about 158,000 jobs in 2004. The number of job openings exceeds the number of hygienists. Dental hygiene occupations are expected to grow at least 27 percent until the year 2014.
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 22 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 12 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
