Area Childcare Professionals Attend Hands-On
Professional Conference at SUNY Canton
EDUCATIONAL FUN - Early childhood students Stacy Dailey of Chase Mills and Ashley Armstrong of Lisbon exploring "gack," which has both the properties of a liquid and a solid during the recent Celebrating Early Care and Education Conference at SUNY Canton.
Childcare professionals learned first-hand how to learn like a child does at SUNY Canton's first professional conference promoting early childhood development and education.
The Early Childhood Program and the St. Lawrence Child Care Council recently co-hosted a professional conference for area family child care and child care center staff, universal pre-k and kindergarten teachers, BOCES students and SUNY Canton Early Childhood students. More than 80 total participants attended seven workshops during the day, with the theme of "Celebrating Early Care and Education."
"It is wonderful to have had the opportunity to show those outside of SUNY Canton the talented and knowledgeable faculty we have at the college," said Early Childhood Program Director Maureen P. Maiocco. "I was also extremely proud the Early Childhood students. They displayed true professionalism and genuine enthusiasm for the seminar."
Bruce Stewart, Director of the St. Lawrence Child Care Council and member of the Early Childhood Advisory Board at SUNY Canton additionally recognized the members of the Early Childhood Student Club and gave the club officers $500 to use for educational resources.
Maiocco and Stewart were so pleased with the feedback and turnout that they are planning another conference for the spring of 2007. "We hope to have this event every semester for all those that work in the field of Early Care and Education," Stewart said.
Among the presentations was Chemistry for Kids, Early Childhood Mathematics, and Everyday Science.
Maiocco was overwhelmed at the response from faculty from SUNY Canton faculty and staff. Among those who presented were Assistant Professor of Biology Nicole Heldt, Associate Professor of Mathematics Mary Gfeller, Assistant Professor of Nursing Mary Ann Caswell, and Science Instructor Beth Acton.
Additional presenters included Potsdam Children's Librarian Sarah Sachs, Arlene Brouillette from the Infant and Toddler Network, and Christina Martin and Tammy Snell from the Northern New York Early Childhood Direction Center in Potsdam.
Maiocco is still ecstatic about the collaborative team of faculty that volunteered their time and put so much effort into making each workshop engaging and educational. Maiocco would also like to thank Dee Burlingame from the St. Lawrence Child Care Council, Matt Flynn, Anne Duncan, Deb Lowry, Anne Latham and Beth Gooder for all of their assistance in making the conference a success. "It was a great day!" Maiocco said.
