WMD Incident Response Program at SUNY Canton, Oct. 26

Small logo  SUNY Canton has invited a national and international Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) expert to help develop deterrence through preparedness for Northern New York.

Tom Creamer, State Preparedness Training Director for the New York State Office of Homeland Security, will be leading a "WMD Incident Response" program at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26 in the Miller Campus Center's Kingston Theater. This three-hour program helps prepare firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, business officials, industry leaders, and even everyday people with the skills necessary to evaluate and take action during a WMD emergency.

The WMD program is presented as part of the newly-created Emergency Management Training Center of Northern New York (EMTCNNY), directed by Martin J. Hassett, under the Office of SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy.

"Whenever you respond to an incident of terrorism caused by foreign or domestic sources, there are key items to look for," said Hassett. "This seminar will show you what to look for and how to protect yourself and those around you."

Creamer, who is also the Deputy Chief of Operations for counter-terrorism programs at the Public Safety Training Center at Onondaga Community College, has an extensive background in situation preparedness and response to disasters, both man-made, accidental, or otherwise. Creamer's seminars are extremely interactive and engaging, according to Hassett. "He provides a common sense approach to WMD incident response," Hassett said. "Someone with no fire or rescue experience can walk away from this program with information that will prove useful."

Creamer will be presenting a review of chemical, biological, and radioactive substances. He will help examine decontamination tactics for incidents and give an overview of public health preparedness and critical infrastructure. Creamer will review the strategies used in recent terrorist attacks, examine deployment and countermeasure strategies, and will highlight incident recognition tactics.

This program is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested. Please call 315-386-7049 or email youngm@canton.edu to reserve a seat.

Hassett brings more than 30 years of emergency response experience to the newly- formed SUNY Canton EMTCNNY. He is currently the President, an active firefighter, and Emergency Medical Technician with the Richville Volunteer Fire Department. He is also a Deputy Fire and Rescue Coordinator with the St. Lawrence County Office of Emergency Services.
