SUNY Canton Fall Festival Begins Sept. 23

Small logo SUNY Canton invites the community to the 2005 Fall Festival and Family and Community Weekend, with free music, games, a car show, a craft fair, and acts on Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24 on the SUNY Canton campus. All events are free and open to the public.

From 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, crafters and artisans are invited to unload their wares at the Richard W. Miller Campus Center Gymnasium for Saturday's Craft Show and Fair.

At 8 p.m. on Friday at the Miller Campus Center's Kingston Theater, there will be a pizza party with music by Sabbatical, one of Northern New York's exciting rock bands. The Canton-based rock band includes: Abby Powers of Fowler, who provides vocals; Dwayne Powers of Fowler, who plays bass guitar; Howard Hubbard of Massena, who plays guitar and adds vocals to the mix; David Parker of Canton, who plays guitar; and Mike Scriminger of Canton, who plays percussion instruments. One of the band's recent performances was at the Ogdensburg Seaway Festival. Sabbatical covers bands and artists including No Doubt, Ashley Simpson, the B-52's, Green Day, Lenny Kravits, Velvet Revolver, Van Morrison, Kelly Clarkson, and Michelle Branch. They also will be playing their original titles. Sabbatical will have CDs available for sale at the performance.

Fall Festival Registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Miller Campus Center. The registration staff may have an updated schedule of events and can provide detailed information and directions.

The SUNY Canton Admissions Open House begins at 8 a.m. Saturday. Admissions counselors will be on-hand to assist prospective students and answer questions about College's eight baccalaureate degrees, 25 associate degrees, 13 certificate programs, and newest master of business administration degree with SUNYIT, Utica. Pre-registration is required for the Admissions Open House. Please call 315/386-7123 or visit www.canton.edu to register.

The annual Craft Fair and Show will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Miller Campus Center Gymnasium. Area craftspeople and artisans will be selling their unique and original wares until 4 p.m. The Craft Show and Fair can provide a chance for visitors and the College community to get an early start on their holiday shopping.

Also beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday in Parking Lot 6, the SUNY Canton Auto Club will be holding their annual "Cruise in," to give hot rod, street rod, muscle, classic, custom and unique car owners the chance to show off their rides. Hot dogs, coffee, and soda will be available for car enthusiasts and spectators. The Auto Club is also planning to have "Dash Plaque" event souvenirs available for registrants while supplies last.

Each year at the Fall Festival, the SUNY Canton Northstars face off against their rivals in a series of home games. At 1 p.m. Saturday on the soccer field, the SUNY Canton Women's Soccer Team will face off against the Broome Community College Hornets from Binghamton. The SUNY Canton Women's Volleyball Team will compete with the Word of Life Bible Institute Women's Volleyball Team (Pottersville) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Dana Athletic Center Gymnasium.

At 2 p.m. Saturday at the Campus Center Plaza, the Plaza Party will kick off. The Plaza Party is home to inflatable rides, games, and much more. College clubs and organizations will be holding special attractions and events. The Early Childhood Club will be offering face painting, hair bead braids, and temporary tattoos for children of all ages.

Students and faculty from the SUNY Canton Physical Therapist Assistant program will be hosting a "Fitness from A to Z" game at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Campus Center, Room 212. The game consists of naming physical activities that begin with corresponding letters of the alphabet. The A to Z game has been a big hit with children and will debut as an adult game for this event.

The SUNY Canton Alumni Association will be hosting an Alumni Reception beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday at Campus Center Rooms 212 and 214. Alumni from all years of the College's history are invited to socialize and discuss the College's history and future over hors d'oeuvres. A portion of the History Wall project will be on display so be prepared to be dazzled with photos and history from the College. Please pre-register for this event by Sept. 19 by calling 1-800-811-6727, or e-mail alumni@canton.edu.

A Picnic in the Plaza will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Campus Center Plaza featuring entertainment by country musician Rachel Williams. Williams was one of the top 15 contestants on USA Network's Nashville Star 2. She has opened for acts including Trace Adkins, Mark Chesnutt, Diamond Rio, Emerson Drive, Sammy Kershaw, Ronnie Milsap, Dan Seals, Clay Walker, and Wynona Judd.

At 7 p.m. Saturday, the Kingston Theater will be the home of ventriloquist, Peggy Miller as she presents the "Willie and Co. Show." Miller and her "friends" Willie, Great Granny Gardner, and Willie's little cousin, Hannah, present a show full of wit, patriotism and humility. Allegedly, Miller has the ability to make audiences forget that she is the voice behind these colorful characters.

At 8 p.m. Saturday at the Kingston Theater, Dan Sanders, "The Amazing Sandman" will be taking the stage to perform his own brand of comedic hypnotic suggestion. This high-energy event should prove to fascinate and unleash the imagination of the audience.

Events will conclude with an Ice Cream Social at 9:15 p.m. Saturday in the lobby outside of the Kingston Theater.
