Popular Film Series on the Big Screen at SUNY Canton

Small logo The SUNY Canton Liberal Studies Department will be presenting four films that artistically represent the transition from adolescence to adult life. The movies are part of a popular film series which begins tomorrow on campus.

"The overall purpose of showing these films is to enhance cultural life on campus," said Liberal Studies Professor Raymond G. Krisciunas, who is one of the organizers of the film series. "We annually select films with themes that relate to the different disciplines and programs, or student life at SUNY Canton. This year's films have a component of the 'Coming of Age' theme."

The Liberal Studies Film series is organized by Krisciunas, Social Sciences Instructor Summer Hahn, Assistant Professor of English Christopher Sweeney, and Associate Professor of Psychology Bruce A. Kenna.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" staring Gregory Peck and Mary Badham, will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 in SUNY Canton's Kingston Theater. To Kill a Mockingbird is the 1962 adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer winning novel of the same title. The film is about a lawyer who defends an African American man in a racially divided Alabama town during the 1930s.

"Road to Perdition" staring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 in the Kingston Theater. Hanks plays a hitman whose loyalty is put to the test when his son sees what he does for a living. This dynamic is further compounded by the fact that the lead character sees his crime-boss as a father figure.

"Almost Famous" staring Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, and Kate Hudson will play at 7 p.m. Monday, April 3 in the Kingston Theater. The film is about a high-school student who follows an up-and-coming rock band to write a story for Rolling Stone Magazine. While on the road, the young writer must learn to deal with his life and falling in love.

"Europa, Europa" by Polish director Agnieszka Holland will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 in the Kingston Theater. "Europa Europa" is based on an autobiography by Solomon Perel. It is about a Jewish boy who manages to conceal his identity and religion from the Nazis and is conscripted into Hitler's Youth. The film has been described as part black comedy and part horror show, as the young man who would be persecuted for his heritage takes stock of all perspectives involved with WWII.

A discussion will follow each of the films. The listed film viewings are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Ray Krisciunas at 315-386-7607, krisr@canton.edu.
