SUNY Canton Plans Winterterm Without Classes
SUNY Canton's first-ever Winterterm semester will feature courses, but not classes. According to SUNY Canton Provost Jeremy D. Brown, all 17 course offerings will be conducted online and enrollment numbers have already exceeded expectations.
Brown and Pauline Graveline, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Support Services implemented a schedule shift in the academic calendar to allow for the creation of the College's first Winterterm semester. The courses are designed for convenience and to accommodate student's schedules.
"With almost two full weeks of registration remaining, we currently have over 100 students enrolled for the Winterterm semester," said Pauline Graveline, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Support Services. "These courses are not exclusive to our regional area, anyone anywhere can enroll in these classes. The number of students from outside of St. Lawrence County and even out-of-state continues to grow. We've also seen a considerable number of working parents and professionals enroll."
Courses range from business offerings like Human Resources Management and Intro to Info Tech to Meteorology and Intro to Psychology. They are open to part-time and full-time students, as well as degree and non-degree students.
Online Winterterm classes provide a way for students to get ahead in their classes, ease workloads for future semesters, or even graduate ahead of schedule, the dean noted. The courses also provide opportunities for working professionals to gain professional development and continuing education while maintaining their workday schedule. Additionally, students who have fallen behind in their course work can take these courses to catch up.
Winterterm online classes begin Monday, Dec. 26 and conclude Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006. Registration for the Winterterm Semester is open until Dec. 23. SUNY Canton will be marking its 100-year anniversary next year and has already begun celebrating with its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. The college is transitioning from a two-year institution to a four-year college. In addition to 25 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers eight four-year degrees with plans to double that number during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers a Masters of Business Administration in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
