SUNY Canton Literary Magazine Seeks Written Works
SUNY Canton is requesting original written or artistic submissions for the upcoming publication of Grasse Roots Literary Magazine.
"Each year we ask SUNY Canton faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members to contribute creative written works and original artwork for publication in our literary magazine," said Nicole Butler, one of the Grasse Roots editors and a SUNY Canton Liberal Arts and Sciences major. "We want to highlight the diversity of local authors, poets, and artists. This year's publication will coincide with SUNY Canton's Centennial Celebration, so we are hoping to receive essays or other written works highlighting the College's unique history."
This year's newest literary submission category is "Sudden Fiction," according to Butler. Sudden Fiction stories strive to tell a complete tale in as few words as possible. Most Sudden Fiction stories should be 750 words or fewer in length. "The Sudden Fiction format is very popular with student writers right now, so we decided to include this category in Grasse Roots."
Other categories for submissions include short stories, poetry, essays, and original artwork. A cash prize is awarded for the best work. To submit work for publication, e-mail it to grasseroots@canton.edu. For further information please e-mail Butler at echidne41@gmail.com or Grasse Roots editor Dominique Mello, at mello101@canton.edu. After the magazine is published in May 2006, contributing authors will be invited for an open reading session where they can share their work and hear the work of others.
The Grasse Roots literary magazine began publishing works from the SUNY Canton community in 1982. Financial support for the magazine is provided by the SUNY Canton College Association, Inc.
SUNY Canton will be marking its 100-year anniversary next year and has already begun celebrating with its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. The college is transitioning from a two-year institution to a four-year college. In addition to 25 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers eight four-year degrees with plans to double that number during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers a Masters of Business Administration in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
