"Ice Breaking" Ceremony Among SUNY Canton
Hockey Reunion Highlights
More than 200 former hockey players, New York State Senator James Wright, and State Assemblyman Darrel Aubertine are all scheduled to participate in the festivities surrounding SUNY Canton's upcoming Hockey Reunion weekend July 14-16. Wright and Aubertine will take part in the college's "Ice Breaking" ceremony celebrating the recent state budget approval to build SUNY Canton's new Athletic and Convocation Center. The "Ice Breaking" ceremony, similar to a groundbreaking, will be held on Saturday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m. across from French Hall.
"We're pleased that Senator Wright and Assemblyman Aubertine will be joining us for our Ice Breaking ceremonies," said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. "They have continually championed SUNY Canton and have remained committed to enacting growth throughout the College's many programs and initiatives. It's appropriate that they be on hand along with so many of our alumni hockey players that have helped pave the way for this new facility."
Hockey Reunion weekend will celebrate 45 years of outstanding hockey and feature alumni hockey games, a banquet, a golf tournament, a cookout, and numerous other activities.
"This will undoubtedly be the largest hockey reunion in the history of SUNY Canton and may become one of the most successful alumni events in the history of the college," said Vice President of Advancement David M. Gerlach. "We've got a lot of great hockey accomplishments to reminisce about and a bright future to look forward to, especially with the new Athletic and Convocation Center on the way."
SUNY Canton has won 15 national NJCAA Ice Hockey Championships. Guided by Head Coach Pat Martin, last year's team advanced to the national semifinals before being eliminated one game short of another national championship appearance. Numerous former players, coaches, fans and family members have committed to attending the Hockey Reunion, including former Head Coach Terry Martin, who guided the team to 12 national titles.
"We've had more than 200 alumni tell us they'll be attending, and more registrations continue to arrive each day," said Director of Alumni Affairs Peggy Levato. "We're really looking forward to reuniting coaches, players, families and friends. It will be a special weekend."
