SUNY Canton’s EMTCNNY holds Inspection Preparedness

Discussion for Emergency Services, June 13

Small logo The Emergency Management Training Center of Northern New York (EMTCNNY) will be sponsoring a panel discussion on the importance of Public Employee Safety and Health (PESH) inspections.

Two sessions of the panel discussion with be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, in Miller Campus Center Room 212. Fire department officers, rescue squad officers, municipal officials, fire district officials, and the public are invited to join the free discussion

"Accidents in emergency services fields are almost inevitable," said EMTCNNY Director Martin J. Hassett. "However, we can reduce the number of preventable injuries and loss of life with proactive planning. The goal of the inspections and this panel discussion is to reduce if not eliminate first responder injuries, help prevent fatalities and to lower costs for municipalities that participate in the self insured Workman's Compensation program."

Every volunteer first responder is considered an employee of their municipality because they are covered under Workman's Compensation, according to Hassett. The PESH Inspections ensure that the same level of safety found at the workplace is extended to volunteer environments. "Village and town officials in St. Lawrence County should also be aware of these inspections," Hassett said.

Hassett said panelists for the event include Dominick Timpano, New York State Department of Labor Senior and PESH Safety Health Inspector, Mike Wassus, St. Lawrence County Director of Emergency Services, and Joe Zacharek, St. Lawrence County Safety Officer.

Topics of conversation will include what to expect from PESH inspections, proper training and recordkeeping, as well as sample standard operating guidelines and procedures for incident response. "Inspectors are willing to work with department officials to solve any problems," Hassett said.
