Small logo International advisors from colleges spanning several continents recently visited SUNY Canton for a preview on the unique courses offered at the College.

"The educational advantages of meeting with university officials from around the world are endless," said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. "We currently are involved with several universities overseas, and these types of visits help in our promoting and recruiting efforts. We're pleased to be recognized internationally as a global institution of higher learning. It enhances the reputation of our college, benefits our current students and faculty, and builds on our foundation for future international growth. The growing number of our four-year degrees continues to generate interest and praise."

Aly Babaly Sy from Mauritania, Africa; Gulsen Oztoparak from Cyprus; Nurise Widjaya from Indonesia; Maria Mercedes Salmon from Ecuador; and Silvia Perez of Mexico examined numerous classes offered at SUNY Canton and had the chance to meet with Kennedy and Provost Jeremy D. Brown.

"We're honored that SUNY Canton was selected for visits from these esteemed international college officials," said Betsy Libby, SUNY Canton Assistant Director of Admissions. "We were pleased to host five influential dignitaries who advise potential students worldwide. SUNY Canton was one of just a handful of colleges in New York and Vermont that were chosen to participate."

Among the classes they toured were courses in the College's Criminal Investigation baccalaureate degree program, where students were examining and mapping a mock crime scene. "Many colleges have lectures," said Perez "It's nice to see all of the hands-on learning."

They also viewed procedures in an examination room of the Newell Veterinary Technology Center as students prepared a cat for operation. And, they observed Physical Therapist Assistant students engaging in lessons and lab work.

A total of just 26 colleges across the United States received contingents of five visitors, according to Libby. The groups started their four-week conference in Washington D.C. and will reconvene in Denver, Colo., to discuss the schools they visited.

SUNY Canton will be marking its 100-year anniversary next year and has already begun celebrating with its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. The College is transitioning from a two-year institution to a four-year College. In addition to 25 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers eight four-year degrees with plans to double that number during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers a Masters of Business Administration in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
