SUNY Canton Lends Helping Hand to
Hurricane Katrina Victims and Displaced Students
SUNY Canton has created late-start classes for students who are
unable to attend college at universities closed by Hurricane Katrina. In
addition, the College has begun contacting alumni who may have been affected
by the disaster and raising money to be donated to American Red Cross relief
efforts.
With more than 75,000 students from schools in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana displaced due to the hurricane, SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy noted he wanted the college to help. "SUNY Canton is joining the effort to ensure that no student goes without an education in the wake of this disaster," said Kennedy.
Students will have two opportunities at SUNY Canton to further their education this semester. Firstly, SUNY Canton will commence on Sept. 19 a "late start" semester in Liberal Arts, and end with the Fall semester on Dec. 12. Classes to be offered will include options in business, humanities, social science and mathematics. Secondly, students are also eligible to enroll in SUNY Canton's intensive scheduling classes to begin on September 19. Intensive scheduling is a series of classes that allows students to take one class in about three weeks, according to SUNY Canton Provost Jeremy D. Brown. Courses available through the intensive scheduling program include opportunities in mathematics, humanities, business, and criminal justice. The master schedule for Fall 2005 can be found at the following college web address: http://www.canton.edu/Master_Schedule/ms.pdf.
SUNY Canton's faculty and staff are preparing for any incoming students from this tragedy. Students will be provided with course registration options, student housing, or counseling services. "We want to extend the same opportunities to these students that we would to those who started classes earlier this week," said Dr. Kennedy. Students and parents seeking assistance or more information should contact the SUNY Canton Office of Admissions at 1-800-388-7123, or (315) 386-7123.
The SUNY Canton Sorority Pi Nu Epsilon is raising money for hurricane Katrina rescue efforts. SUNY Canton students, faculty and staff can purchase paper angels for $1 $5 or $10. The angels are then displayed at Rendezvous in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center. The angels will be on sale through Monday. The sorority, advised by Michael J. Perry, SUNY Canton College Association Executive Director, is also planning to sell bottled water for a $1 donation. The bottled water is symbolic; each bottle sold will represent one sent to Katrina victims, according to Perry. All proceeds from these fundraisers are donated to the Red Cross.
