Four-Year Legal Studies Program and Law Enforcement Leadership
and Management Program Added at SUNY Canton
Two new four-year programs have been approved for the Fall 2006
semester at SUNY Canton, making a total of 12 bachelor's degrees offered at
the college according to Provost Jeremy D. Brown.
The unique four-year Legal Studies program and the Law Enforcement Leadership and Management program have gone through the rigorous approval process of the State University of New York and the State Education Department. Both programs will be offered in SUNY Canton's online-learning format.
"The two degrees add even more choices for students who are interested in future careers within the legal or law enforcement fields," said Brown. "Both programs utilize many of the strengths found in current baccalaureate degree programs within the SUNY Canton School of Business and Public Service."
Jonathan Gueverra, Dean of the School of Business and Public Service, noted that not only is the four-year legal studies program unique to SUNY Canton's geographic area, it is unique to the entire SUNY system. "A non-partial reviewer of the program indicated that the astute mixture of general education and professional courses will give students every opportunity to become well-rounded and well-educated legal professionals," Gueverra said.
Graduates of SUNY Canton's Legal Studies program may find employment in law firms, corporations, hospitals and local, state or federal government offices. Since the program covers many legal specialties, students may choose electives from Criminal Investigation or Business Courses to help them specialize in certain areas.
The Law Enforcement Leadership and Management Program will provide training suitable for future police officers and civilians, according to Gueverra. "We have developed a solid backbone of courses that will take Law Enforcement Leadership and Management graduates through the rest of their professional careers," Gueverra said.
Jobs for graduates in law enforcement are projected to increase by 24.7 percent through 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Students in the Law Enforcement Leadership and Management Program can expect to learn how to deal with tactical responses to challenging situations in both emergency and non-emergency situations. An ethics course has also been designed into the curriculum and will provide a strong background for students as they enter the workforce.
Both programs follow in the footsteps of the State Education Department's approval to provide completely online programs in Emergency and Disaster Management, Alternative and Renewable Energy Applications, Mortuary Services Management, Veterinary Services Management, Technology Management, Financial Services, Criminal Investigation, and Facilities Operation. The college now has the ability to offer 10 of its 12 baccalaureate degrees to students via the Internet.
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 23 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 12 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. The College has recently embarked upon articulation agreements with Lomonosov Moscow State University and Osaka College of Foreign Languages and International Business in Japan, allowing international scholars the ability to obtain a SUNY Canton degree locally or abroad.
