Fred Liebi Named SUNY Canton 2006 Distinguished Alumnus

Frederick (Fred) C. Liebi of Baldwinsville will be among those honored at SUNY Canton's 98th Commencement Ceremony held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, in Alumni Gymnasium at Dana Athletic Center.

Liebi is a 1966 SUNY Canton alumnus who graduated from Camden Central School in 1964. He owns and operates FCL Management Inc., which specializes in management and construction projects for various industrial, commercial, and private companies. Liebi recently managed the design and construction of the set for NBC's Today Show broadcasts of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.

Last year, Liebi and his wife, Karen, created the Liebi Endowed Scholarship at SUNY Canton. The Liebi Scholarship is among several recent College Foundation endowments focused on expanding scholarships to encompass the entire duration of a student's education.

Liebi studied Construction Engineering Technology at SUNY Canton, and then went on to work with Visconti Corporation in Solvay from 1966 to 1980. He worked from 1983 to 2003 with the design firm of Stetson Dale, Utica, which became Montgomery Watson Harza. In 2003, Liebi founded his own company.

"We owe SUNY Canton a lot," Liebi said. "Not only for the formal education that I received, but also, and maybe even more important, the guidance, leadership and friendships that we have received through the college. I can never hope to repay the many faculty members and advisors that helped me during the initial two years at Canton and the many years after."

Liebi was very active in student organizations including the President's Council, the Cantonians, the college chorus, and the Outing Club. He was also the President of Alpha Theta Gamma Fraternity.

"I hope that future SUNY Canton students experience the same guidance and education that my late sister Beverly Liebi, my niece Beth Bernier, my nephew Ryan Liebi, and I received," Liebi said.

The Liebi Endowed Scholarship is part of the SUNY Canton College Foundation scholarships that have totaled almost $2,000,000 in aid to students and more than $100,000 in development awards to faculty and staff members in the past 15 years. Almost 200 students received scholarship assistance from the SUNY Canton College Foundation last year.

SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 25 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 10 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. The College has recently embarked upon articulation agreements with Lomonosov Moscow State University and Osaka College of Foreign Languages and International Business in Japan, allowing international scholars the ability to obtain a SUNY Canton degree locally or abroad.
