SUNY Canton Alumnus Creates

Endowed Scholarship

Small logo  The former President of the SUNY Canton Alumni association and his wife recently donated the funds to create an endowed scholarship for students majoring in curriculums at the Canino School of Engineering Technology.

"The Frederick C. and Karen Liebi Endowed Scholarship is one of the integral scholarships that will allow the college to continue offering a quality education to students who demonstrate financial need," said SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy. "The endowment comes at a time when we are expanding our scholarship program to offer students financial assistance for the duration of their SUNY Canton education."

Frederick (Fred) C. Liebi and his wife Karen of Baldwinsville, recently donated $10,000 to create the Liebi Endowed Scholarship. Liebi is a 1966 graduate of Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute, who majored in Construction Engineering Technology. Liebi owns and operates FCL Management Inc., which specializes in the management and construction projects for various industrial, commercial, and private companies including a project for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.

The Liebi's $10,000 donation will accrue interest for one year, and then the interest is awarded yearly, to a student studying one of SUNY Canton's Construction curriculums, or other programs at the Canino School of Engineering Technology.

Liebi said that he decided the SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign presented a perfect time to start the scholarship fund. The SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign challenges the College to raise $10 million in donations and is slated to enter the public donation phase in May 2006. "We owe SUNY Canton a lot, Not only for the formal education that I received, but also, and maybe even more important, the guidance, leadership and friendships that we have received through the College," Liebi said.

Liebi was very active in student organizations including the President's Council, the Cantonians, a College chorus, and the Outing Club. He was also the President of Alpha Theta Gamma Fraternity during the 1965 to 1966 College year. "I can never hope to repay the many faculty members and advisors that helped me during the initial two years at Canton and the many years since." Liebi said.

Liebi said he and his wife were inspired by the donations of other alumni and by the success of their family members have had upon graduating from SUNY Canton. "I hope that this donation helps future SUNY Canton students experience the same guidance and education that my sister Beverly, my niece Beth Bernier, my nephew Ryan and I received," Liebi said.
