Two to Receive David R. Maynard Student Activities Award
A leader in student government and a non-traditional student who helped prepare taxes for North Country families are both recipients of SUNY Canton's David R. Maynard Student Activities Award.
The David R. Maynard Student Activities Award is given yearly to a student who demonstrates superior citizenship, outstanding leadership, and who has generously given time to extracurricular activities. This year, the selection committee decided that Anna Livingston of Lisbon and Cindy Lovely of Heuvelton were equally deserving of the honor.
Anna Livingston of Lisbon will be graduating with her Associate Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences: General Studies. Earlier this semester, she was honored in Albany as a recipient of the 2006 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Livingston is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She is a certified teacher's aide and is a classroom volunteer at Lisbon Central School. Livingston has been involved with a plethora of student activities. She has been vice president for Peer Educators; a Student Representative for the College Association Board of Directors; College Union Board (CUB) secretary; Student Cooperative Alliance (SCA) secretary; and others. She is active with the Lisbon Wesleyan Church and has submitted written works for publication in Grasse Roots, the college's literary magazine. Livingston has also received awards from the CUB and the SCA.
Livingston was also awarded an Alumni Association Scholarship through the SUNY Canton College Foundation. College Foundation scholarships have totaled almost $2 million in aid to students, and more than $100,000 in development awards to faculty and staff members in the past 15 years. Almost 200 students received scholarship assistance from the SUNY Canton College Foundation last year.
Cindy Lovely of Heuvelton is receiving her Associate Degree in Business Administration and plans on continuing her education through SUNY Canton online courses. For two years, she has freely donated her time to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, helping low- to middle-income individuals and families prepare their taxes. Her volunteer efforts have helped people receive income tax refunds totaling approximately $45,000. This year, she headed up the program out of the School of Business and Public Service Office. Her volunteer work came in addition to a full-time job and time spent with her two young children, Donald and Alan.
Livingston and Lovely will be among those honored at SUNY Canton's 98th Commencement Ceremony held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, in Alumni Gymnasium at Dana Athletic Center.
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 25 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 10 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. The College has recently embarked upon articulation agreements with Lomonosov Moscow State University and Osaka College of Foreign Languages and International Business in Japan, allowing international scholars the ability to obtain a SUNY Canton degree locally or abroad.
