SUNY Canton Offering Master of Business Administration
with SUNYIT
SUNY Canton has partnered with the State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT) in Utica to add a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program to the baccalaureate, associate, and certificate programs already offered at the College for fall 2005, SUNY Canton Provost Jeremy D. Brown announced today.
"By offering the SUNYIT MBA degree at SUNY Canton, we are encouraging our own students and alumni to complete another rung on the ladder to success," said Brown. "Furthermore, potential students from other fields may take some of SUNY Canton's courses in preparation for the MBA and thereby earn credit in this stimulating program. We are thrilled to be working with SUNYIT in this exciting venture."
Jonathan Gueverra, SUNY Canton School of Business and Public Service Dean said the initial classes would be offered via a video conference with SUNYIT and SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse. "This program will fit well with our Bachelor of Business Administration Degrees in Technology Management, Technology Management: Facilities Operation, Technology Management: Financial Services, and Information Technology: Web Development," Gueverra said. "Our students will be able to take master's level classes online, through video conferencing, or face-to-face. If students meet requirements, they can take a fast track program enabling them to complete their master's degree in one year."
The SUNYIT MBA at SUNY Canton will be open to anyone who already has a bachelor's degree, and prospective students will be required to score 400 or better on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). However, students with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher are allowed to make a "Quick Start" and can take up to six master's level credits (2 courses) before taking the GMAT.
Gueverra noted another benefit of the new MBA program is that SUNY Canton students, who are working toward a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, can begin taking master's level classes before graduating. "With this degree, we are saying that when you start here you can finish here, and then you can go anywhere," Gueverra said. "It will provide additional opportunities for students and more qualified employees for North Country employers."
Classes for the SUNYIT MBA in Technology Management at SUNY Canton are scheduled to begin this fall, with a Monday 6 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. "Managing New Product Design and Development" class, and a Thursday 6 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. "Management Information Systems" class, according to Gueverra. Classes will run from Aug. 29 to Dec. 15 in the Distance Learning Room in SUNY Canton's Payson Hall. The evening classes are offered to increase accessibility for people who are already working. The two classes will be offered in a video conference format from professors at SUNYIT. In the future, regional instructors and professors may also be teaching the MBA classes.
