Set to Play at SUNY Canton, Nov. 16
The SUNY Canton College Association, Inc. will be hosting the United States Military Academy Concert Band from West Point at 8 p.m., Nov. 16 in Dana Athletic Center's Alumni Gymnasium.
"This is one of the final events of our Centennial Celebration," said College Association Executive Director Michael J. Perry. "We'd like to extend an open invitation for the community to join us at this premier concert. The U.S. Military Academy Concert Band presents a truly spectacular performance."
This event is offered completely free and open to the public, but seating will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The United States Military Academy Band, the U.S. Army's oldest active band and the oldest unit at West Point, traces its roots to the Revolutionary War. The 48-member concert wind band, comprised solely of enlisted personnel, has earned the reputation of being the finest of its kind in the world.
The Concert Band has a history marked with several world-class performances and close associations with renowned composers. Percy Grainger, one of the first composers to fully utilize the unique instrumentation of the wind ensemble, often called upon the band at West Point to initially play his new compositions. The band also enjoyed its relationship with American composer and conductor Morton Gould. His 1952 contribution "Symphony for Band," still stands as a staple in the band's repertoire.
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 22 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 12 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
