SUNY Canton Welcomes New Hires for 2005-06

New faces were among the faculty and staff who greeted over 800 students at SUNY Canton, earlier this semester. The majority of individuals hired in 2005 and 2006 fill newly created positions and key vacancies created by retirements or attrition.
- Beth Acton, Science Instructor, received her Bachelor of Science in Honors Biochemistry from McGill University, Montreal. Acton is nearing completion on her Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Toronto. Acton has taught Eukaryotic Molecular Biology and Human Physiology at the University of Toronto, online Applied Immunology Labs for Charles Sturt University, Australia, and Introductory Human Genetics at the Michener Institute.
- Matthew Bullwinkel, Assistant Canino School of Engineering Technology Professor, earned his Master of Sciences in Environmental Engineering from Lenox Institute for Research and his Doctorate from Clarkson University in Chemical Engineering. Among Bullwinkel’s classes, he will be teaching future courses in SUNY Canton’s Alternative and Renewable Energy Applications program. Previously, he taught at SUNY Canton in the Physics department and in the Engineering Science program.
- Emily Boyce, Institutional Advancement Development Associate, earned her Bachelor of Sciences in Public Relations from Utica College, where she held several internship positions in Institutional Advancement, Alumni and Parent Relations, and Media Relations. She has prior experience in planning and hosting alumni events as well as writing college publications and press releases. She is a former Utica College Student Newspaper Editor and a volunteer student ambassador.
- Martha Cole, Nurse Practitioner, earned her Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa., and her Nurse Practitioner Certification from Community General Hospital in Syracuse. Cole previously served as College Nurse for Mater Dei College and also worked in private practice with Dr. Andrew Ogden.
- Michael Donnelly, Academic Counselor, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration from Le Moyne College and a Master of Education in Counseling and Human Development from St. Lawrence University. Donnelly performed part of his practicum experience at Hugh C. Williams High School, where he worked closely with students, faculty, and parents regarding personal, academic, and post high school concerns.
- Rebecca Goldin, Admissions Counselor, received her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Elmira College and is currently working on her Master of Sciences in Education. While earning her bachelor degree at Elmira, Goldin worked in the Office of Admissions as an Overnight Coordinator, a tour guide, and an open house representative.
- Jeffrey Gregory, North Country Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Assistant Director, has nearly twenty years experience in the EMS field. Gregory’s involvement with SUNY Canton’s EMS Program will include interaction with ambulance services and hospitals across Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties.
- Martin Hassett, Director of the Emergency Management Training Center of Northern New York, is a 1971 alumnus of SUNY Canton with a degree in Business Administration. He is currently the President, an active firefighter, and Emergency Medical Technician with the Richville Volunteer Fire Department. Hassett is currently researching avenues to provide training for emergency personnel to respond to both natural and man-made disasters.
- Patrick Hamilton, Assistant Business Professor, received his Bachelor of Sciences with an emphasis in Marketing and French from Central Michigan University and his Master of Business Administration from Delaware State University with an emphasis in finance.
- Patrick Hanss, Assistant Facilities Planning Coordinator, has earned two Associate Degrees from SUNY Canton in Air Conditioning Engineering Technology and Individual Studies. He also earned two Certificates from SUNY Canton in Electrical Construction and Maintenance, and Heating and Plumbing Service. He previously worked for Carthage Central School District as Director of School Facilities and Operations.
- Feng Hong, Assistant Physics Professor, received his Bachelor of Sciences in Physics from Zhejiang University, China. He taught Physics at Hefei University, China for 12 years before moving to North Dakota and earning his Master of Sciences and Doctorate in Physics at North Dakota State University. Hong has taught classes in Optics, Quantum Mechanics, and Astronomy. Recently, he has been a post-doctoral research associate at Washington State University working on detecting and analyzing environmental contaminants.
- Lashawanda Ingram, Residence Hall Director, earned her Bachelor of Sciences in Sociology and Master of Sciences in Student Personnel Administration from SUNY Buffalo. She has internship experience from SUNY Buffalo’s Residence Life and Success Track for Academic Readiness.
- Peggy Jenkins, Assistant Accounting Professor, received her Bachelor of Sciences in Accounting from Bridgewater College, Va. and a Master of Sciences in Accounting from Penn State University. She previously taught Accounting at the University of Wales, Bangor, U.K.
- Jennifer Jordan, Clinical Coordinator for North Country Emergency Medical Services, is a graduate of Capital Community College’s Paramedic Program in Connecticut. Jordan was employed by American Medical Response as a Senior Staff Paramedic.
- Susan Kramer, EOP Counselor, has an Associate of Arts in Social Studies from Waubonsee Community College, Illinois; a Bachelor of Arts in Interpersonal Communication from Governors State University, Illinois, and a Masters in Theology from Recent College, Vancouver. Kramer has worked in human services positions in Ecuador and Bangladesh. She is a volunteer with Community Energy Services and secretary of the Pyrites Volunteer Fire Department.
- Peggy LaFrance, Assistant Nursing Professor, received her Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing from Plattsburgh State University and her Master of Sciences in Nursing from Syracuse University. She is currently enrolled in the Doctorate program at Walden University. Ms. LaFrance formerly worked at North Country Community College, as Director of Nursing and Assistant Professor of Nursing. She also has been Medical Floor Head Nurse and Director of Nursing at Saranac Lake General Hospital.
- Edouard Mafoua, Assistant Business Professor, received his Doctorate in Applied Economics with a concentration in Environmental, Natural Resources, Production Economics and Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mafoua has worked in Congo-Brazzaville as Head of the Department of Programs and Rural Statistics at the Office of Rural Development.
- Janet Marsden, Assistant Information Technology Professor, received her Master of Sciences in Telecommunications and Network Management from Syracuse University and a Master of Business Administration in Information Systems Management and Human Resource Management from St. John Fisher College. Marsden plans to complete her Doctorate in Environmental and Community Land Planning from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 2006. Her industry experience includes Manager of Environmental Projects for Cornell University and Manager of Environmental and Construction Projects for Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station.
- Kristen Martin, Upward Bound Program Academic Advisor and Counselor, earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in History from SUNY Potsdam. Martin was a Residential Counselor and Volunteer/Intern Coordinator for St. Lawrence Valley Renewal House in Canton. She also worked at the United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton.
- Teresa Minckler, Fitness Center Director and Women’s Soccer Coach, earned an Associate Degree at Mater Dei College, where she was a Most Valuable Player in soccer and a NJCAA All-American in basketball. She earned her Bachelor Degree in Athletic Training from University of North Carolina at Pembroke and her Master Degree in teaching from SUNY Potsdam.
- Frederick Morrill, College Association Controller, is a 1989 alumnus of SUNY Canton and has a Bachelor of Sciences in Accounting from Clarkson University. He is a Certified Management Accountant. Morrill has served as Chief Financial Officer at Hoosier Magnetics Inc. in Ogdensburg, Controller at a Minerals Technologies manufacturing plant in Canaan, Conn., Accounting Supervisor at Champion International in Houston, and Cost Analyst at Champion International in Deferiet.
- Diane Muehl, Assistant Sociology Professor, received a Bachelor of Sciences in Speech Science and Psychology from SUNY Albany, a Master of Arts in Gerontology from Eastern Illinois University, a Master of Sciences in Audiology and Counseling from Purdue University, and a Doctorate in Sociology from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She previously taught Sociology at University of Illinois.
- Nicholas Nofi, Men’s Basketball Coach, earned his Bachelor Degree in Physical Education from Rhode Island College and has 19 years of coaching experience at the high school and college levels. Nofi spent the last three years as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Potomac State College in West Virginia, where he built a 47-37 overall record and won the NJCAA Region XXA Championship in 2003. Prior to joining Potomac State, Nofi was head coach at Five Towns College in Long Island and at Jamestown Community College. He has also been an assistant coach at South Mountain Community College, Glendale Community College, and Phoenix College in Arizona.
- Bryan O’Connor, Assistant Director of Student Activities, earned his Associate in Accounting and his Bachelor of Sciences in Financial Services from SUNY Canton. While attending college, O’Connor served as the Budget Director for the Student Cooperative Alliance and the Head Technician for the College Union Board. He recently worked at Hudson Valley College, as an Assistant for Financial Analysis.
- Amanda Pickering, Upward Bound Program Director, earned her Bachelor of Sciences in Psychology form Clarkson University and her Master of Education from St. Lawrence University. Pickering has worked at St. Lawrence University as an Academic Advisor and Counselor in the Upward Bound program. She has also worked at Clarkson University as an Assistant Director in the Higher Education Opportunity Program and at the St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging as a Program Administrator in the Employment Program.
- Pamela Quinn, Assistant Dental Hygiene Program Professor, received her Bachelor and Master of Sciences in Health Education from SUNY Cortland. She recently worked as an Associate Vice President for Academic Services and Assistant Professor and Department Chairperson for Dental Health Education at Onondaga Community College. Quinn also worked as a full- time adjunct for Broome Community College and has had many years of dental hygiene clinical experience.
- Michael Scriminger, Help Desk Technician, worked at Campus Activities while receiving his Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from SUNY Canton. He earned his Bachelor of Sciences in Business, Management, and Economics with a concentration in Business of Music and Entertainment from Empire State College. He is currently pursuing a Master Degree in Information Technology from SUNY Potsdam.
- Anthony Signorelli, Health Services Management Instructor, received his Bachelor of Arts from St. Michaels College in Vermont and a Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from Vrij Universiteit Brussels in Belgium. Signorelli has previous experience as an Adjunct Instructor in Chemistry and Biology courses at Mildred Elley College, SUNY Albany, Hudson Valley Community College and Siena College.
- Kathryn Smith, Upward Bound Program Academic Advisor and Counselor, earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication from SUNY Geneseo and recently her Master of Arts in English and Communication from SUNY Potsdam. She worked for SUNY Canton previously as a Professional Tutor in the Writing Center and as an Expository Writing Adjunct Instructor. Ms. Smith has also served as a Tutor Counselor for the 2004 Upward Bound summer program.
- Robert Strong, Assistant Humanities Professor, received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Boston College, a Master of Fine Arts in Writing and Poetics from the Naropa Institute, and his Doctorate in Literary Studies and Creative Writing from the University of Denver. His previous teaching experiences include the English Department at the University of Denver and the first-year program at St. Lawrence University.
- Nathan Sunday, Senior Counselor with the Upward Bound Program, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from SUNY Potsdam and is currently working on his Master of Sciences in Counseling in Human Development from St. Lawrence University. Sunday was a Counselor in the Upward Bound Program at St. Lawrence University. He has also worked as a Teacher’s Assistant and a Truant Officer for the Salmon River Central School District.
- Christopher Sweeney, Assistant English Professor, received his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from St. Lawrence University, a Master of Arts in English Literature and his Doctorate in English from the University of Rochester. Locally, Sweeney has taught courses as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University. He was also an Adjunct Faculty Member at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Eastman School of Music, Rochester.
- Sophia Theodore, Veterinary Science Technology Instructor, received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from St. Lawrence University, a Master of Sciences in Community Development from the University of Missouri-Columbia, Mo., and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Ill. Theodore has worked as a veterinarian at Hilltop Mobile Veterinary Clinic in Watertown. She has volunteered for the Potsdam Animal Shelter and Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad.
- Missy West, Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach and Assistant Fitness Center Director, is in her second year with the Women’s Basketball Team here at SUNY Canton. She earned her Bachelor Degree from Duke University, North Carolina. Over her five years at Duke, she led the Blue Devils to a 130-36 record, two Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament titles, and three regular season titles. After graduating from Duke, West spent three years in Germany playing professional basketball for Wolfenbuettel and Gottingen.
