SUNY Canton Registrar Lauded

Barbara Porter

Small logo A SUNY Canton employee was recently recognized for streamlining the student registration process and providing a strong foundation of reliable information for anyone in need.

Barbara N. Porter of Potsdam, Director of Academic Information, Records and Registration, was the recipient of the SUNY Canton College Council's 2005 Excellence in College Service Award. Porter was recommended by numerous faculty and staff at SUNY Canton, many of which described her as knowing nearly everything about the inner-workings of the College and the State University of New York.

"Barb does a thorough job when she completes tasks," said Jodi Revill, SUNY Canton Director of Admissions. "Anytime I have asked her for information she has always provided me with the information I needed and much, much more."

Revill said she could count on Barbara to point out any factors that may have been missed from any project. "There have been many times that Barb has been the only one who could answer my question," Revill said. "I believe she has been the only one who could answer questions for many people."

Barry W. Walch, SUNY Canton Mortuary Science Assistant Professor said that through Porter's hard work, the campus community has come to expect new levels of perfection. "Clearly the Registrar's position has become increasingly difficult with the addition of new programs in the past few years," said Walch. "She makes it look effortless when really, it is anything but easy."

Porter's education includes a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from Delaware State College and has continued to utilize and broaden her sophisticated knowledge of computer programs. Her experience with computers has led her to match her levels of perfection in the realms of scheduling, prerequisites, and credit hours. Numerous SUNY Canton faculty and staff have relied on her to de-mystify some of the more intricate portions of the ever-expanding Banner Student Computer Database.

Porter also serves as reader for the SUNY Canton Commencement Ceremony, a responsibility that requires nerves of steel and quick reaction skills. Her interpersonal skills have also been commended by Deb Lowry, SUNY Canton Special Events Coordinator. "Barbara is one of the first people students come into contact with when they join the school and one of the last voices students hear when leaving," Lowry said.

Porter is a member of the State University of New York Registrar's Association and attends meeting of the Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley. She is also the Veteran's Liaison at SUNY Canton. She draws inspiration from her partner, Stephen Douglass of Potsdam.
