SUNY Canton Future Engineer Receives Award
from First Nations Technical Service Corp.
A SUNY Canton Engineering Science Technology major from Akwesasne has received the Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation's Award for student engineers.
Beynan T. Ransom received the award after excelling during his summer employment at the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Department of Technical Services. It is one of just four awards given to students from the 134 First Nations represented by the Technical Service Corp., according to Department of Technical Services Director Jay Benedict.
"Beynan has demonstrated the initiative and the maturity to see projects through to completion from a very young age," Benedict said.
Benedict's sentiment about Ransom's work ethic was mirrored by SUNY Canton Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Michael J. Newtown. "Beynan knows where he wants to go and he knows how he's going to get there," Newtown said. "He puts a lot of time and energy into his work and doesn't cut himself any slack. Right now he is a great engineering student he will be a great engineer in the future."
Ransom also received an award for his high grade point average during his first-year at the college's Margaret P. Vining Honors Convocation. He has also played lacrosse for the SUNY Canton Northstars. This year, Ransom joined the American Society of Civil Engineers Steel Bridge Team.
Ransom's future plans include obtaining multiple degrees and possibly owning his own engineering firm.
The Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation that provides professional technical advisory services to all First Nations in Ontario. Ransom received his award Oct. 4 at the Technical Services Corporation's annual conference themed "Building Excellence for Future Generations."
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 22 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 12 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
