SUNY Canton University Police Secretary Recognized
SUNY Canton's University Police Secretary was awarded for her loyalty, dedication and for informally adopting the SUNY Canton community as her family.
Cheryl (Cher) Rooney of Canton, Secretary 2 at the SUNY Canton University Police Department, was recently commended with the 2005 SUNY Canton College Council Employee Recognition Award. Rooney has been working at SUNY Canton for ten years and is a 1969 alumna.
She has been described as one of the people who help keep many aspects of the College running smoothly, according to Steven L. Livernois, SUNY Canton University Police Officer and Director of the David Sullivan/St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy.
Livernois said that Rooney is sensitive, caring and helpful. "Cher is a clear leader as evidenced by her success in maintaining order at the University Police Station," Livernois said. "She daily goes beyond duties of being a receptionist, dispatcher, and office manager. She is held in high esteem by SUNY Canton employees and students because she treats each individual as a family member."
William F. Mason, SUNY Canton University Police Chief said when Rooney served as an advisor for the SUNY Canton Cheerleading squad, she provided advice and support to each member of the team. "She dedicated her time without compensation, and she solicited funding for new uniforms," Mason said.
Patricia Todd, SUNY Canton Director of Health Services noted Rooney's professionalism and courtesy in stressful times. "Cher is often our first contact when we call the University Police with an emergency," said Todd. "She always is calm and in control no matter what the situation. It is always nice to hear her friendly voice."
Rooney has helped with the behind-the-scene workings of College events, including SUNY Canton's 2005 Commencement Ceremony. Todd said that Rooney's volunteer service has been inspirational. "It is her service as a former advisor to the SUNY Canton Cheerleading Squad in which she truly demonstrates her dedication to the students and this College," Todd said. "I saw her working with groups during many late afternoons and into the evening. Many of the cheerleaders knew her as their other mom."
Rooney has two sons and three grandchildren outside of her family at SUNY Canton; Shawn of North Carolina has one daughter, Addison, and Chris of Florida has two sons, Griffin and Ryan.
