SBDC Business of Tourism Conference, Oct. 25

Small logo  SUNY Canton's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) can help demonstrate how regional business and organizations can expand sales to those who come seeking the beauty and attractions of the extended North Country area.

The SBDC and Comlinks Women's Entrepreneurial Business Center are co-hosting a conference "The Business of Tourism: Unify and Diversify Northern New York" from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25 at the Wolfclan Restaurant on State Route 37, in Hogansburg. The fee for this conference is $45. To register for "The Business of Tourism," or for more information, please call Comlinks at 518-483-1261, or the SBDC at 315-386-7312.

"Sometimes tourism is overlooked in Northern New York," said Michelle Collins, SBDC Business Advisor. "There is actually a lot going on to draw visitors, like the Carp Tournament in Waddington, the future addition of a race track in Brasher Falls, the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, in addition to the fall foliage."

At the conference, attendants can learn how to promote the events and region-specific activities to attract more customers, according to Collins. She mentioned that a number of businesses have not realized that they can be impacted by tourism. She proposes that a number of businesses collaborate to market their unique products and services to tourists together. "A lot of support can come from partnerships and communities sharing and realizing what each has to offer," Collins said. "There will also be a brainstorming session on what Northern New York needs to do, as a whole, to attract more tourism business."

Among the conference sessions to be offered are: a description of current Northern New York tourism efforts with Chambers of Commerce from St. Lawrence County, Malone, Saranac Lake, Franklin County, and the Thousand Islands International Council; marketing and using the Internet; how artists and crafts people can reach the tourism market; and using local media to increase tourism revenue.

The SBDC also offers free direct counseling and a wide range of management and technical assistance services. Business advisors can help start-ups develop a business plan, assist existing businesses preparing to expand, and offer resources for industry-specific topics.
