Senator Schumer Visits SUNY Canton

Small logo New York State Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York) visited SUNY Canton on Friday, August 5, to discuss the North Country economy with area officials.

The Senator also held conversations with SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy, SUNY Canton Provost Jeremy D. Brown, and SUNY Canton Executive Assistant to the President and Chief Government Relations Officer Carli C. Schiffner. Among the topics discussed were the college's biodiesel research program and the newly-founded Emergency Management Training Center of Northern New York.

The occasion marked Senator Schumer's seventh trip to the North Country. He discussed the allocation of federal monies for the planning of a rooftop highway connecting Interstate 81 to Interstate 87 and beyond, which he said was well on the way to becoming a reality. He also discussed the various economic issues that can adversely affect the Northern New York economy with area advocates and officials.

Wesley L. Stitt, Chairman of the SUNY Canton College Council, presented Senator Schumer with a hearty welcome and the book "The Frederic Remington Art Museum Collection" by Brian W. Dippir, to help the Senator remember his visit to the North Country. Pictured are (from left) SUNY Canton President Joseph L. Kennedy, Stitt, and Schumer.

Assemblyman Darrell J. Aubertine (D-Cape Vincent) joined Senator Schumer in SUNY Canton's Kingston Theater for his discussion about the economy in the North Country. Pictured are (from left) Aubertine, Kennedy and Schumer.

Hurlbut, Schumer and Newtown

Senator Schumer was scheduled to tour the SUNY Canton Newell Veterinary Technology Center and Nevaldine Hall, home of the Canino School of Engineering Technology. However, time ran short so SUNY Canton Canino School of Engineering Technology Dean Arthur G. Hurlbut and Mechanical Engineering Technology Assistant Professor Michael J. Newtown briefly discussed some of the College's plans for the upcoming year and presented the Senator with a Polaris Industries hat, commemorating the upcoming anniversary of the SUNY Canton Motorsports Performance and Repair curriculum.
