SUNY Canton Set to Remember Sept. 11, 2001
SUNY Canton extends an open invitation to join two college events commemorating the fifth anniversary of September 11, 2001.
The SUNY Canton School of Business and Public Service in conjunction with the Criminal Justice Student Association will be holding a memorial ceremony at 8:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, outside of Payson Hall facing Dana Athletic Center.
According to Assistant Professor of Criminal Investigation William J. Fassinger, the ceremony offers a chance for students and community members to pay tribute to the contributions and sacrifices made by fallen police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, as well as the military personnel and civilians.
"It was a mere five years ago that many police, fire and emergency medical personnel gave their lives in efforts to abate the disasters," said Fassinger. "It is important for our students to remember and honor those who sacrificed all that they had in the wake of the attacks. This ceremony gives students and community members the chance to say 'thank you' and reflect upon our nation's loss."
The Ceremony is free and open to the public. Firefighters attending are asked to wear their dress, or Class A uniforms.
Additionally, a panel discussion on diversity, tolerance, and intolerance in post Sept. 11, 2001 culture will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, in the Miller Campus Center Kingston Theater. The discussion will be moderated by Associate Professor of Sociology Amani M. Awwad. Panelists include SUNY Canton Professor of Humanities Christopher Nouryeh, as well as John Collins and Saiyed Nadeemlul Hasnain from St. Lawrence University. Awwad has been heralded by the State University of New York for her research on the Islamic culture.
