Silent March to Lend a Voice Against
Domestic Violence, Thursday, Oct. 26
SUNY Canton will be holding a "silent march" to raise awareness about domestic violence at 12:30 p.m. Thursday Oct. 26, beginning in the Roselle Academic Plaza.
"October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month," said SUNY Canton Chief of Staff Carli C. Schiffner, PhD. "The goal of designating a month or a day to a cause is to increase knowledge about a reoccurring problem during the entire year."
Schiffner said that the "silent march" is an initiative promoted by New York State Assembly member Naomi Rivera of the Bronx, to mobilize college campuses throughout the state to raise awareness about domestic violence. "This is the second year we have held a silent march to recognize this problem," Schiffner said.
Melinda Miller, the interim director of student counseling will also be delivering a message about the importance of breaking the silence and ending domestic violence before marchers begin their silent journey. Members of the SUNY Canton Women's Concerns organization, the Criminal Justice Club, and members of college's fraternities and sororities will be assisting with the march.
This event is free and open to the public.
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 22 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 12 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
