SUNY Canton Summer Enrollment
Hits an All-Time High
Summer enrollment at SUNY Canton has hit an all-time high with numbers dramatically increasing in online enrollment and overall students.
"Our online enrollment numbers continue to significantly increase," said SUNY Canton Provost Jeremy D. Brown. "We've bolstered the number of online course offerings from 20 last year to 30 this summer and we've seen a 77 percent growth in that enrollment."
In addition to the online courses, the college is offering 12 on-campus courses this summer according to Pauline A. Graveline, Dean of the School of Liberal Studies and Support Services. Approximately 469 students have currently signed up for summer courses, compared to 385 during the 2005 Summer Session. Online enrollment has grown from 205 last year to 363 this summer.
"The flexibility, convenience, and accessibility of our online courses continue to attract large numbers of students," Graveline said. "They can take SUNY Canton courses without interfering with jobs, vacations, or other summer plans."
Graveline said the strong Summer Session numbers follow in the footsteps of the highly successful online Winterterm semester. Both sessions saw a significant increase in the number of non-SUNY Canton or non-matriculated students.
"The online environment eliminates distance constraints," said Graveline. "We have students taking online courses this summer from as far away as Australia and Thailand. We saw similar long distance students enroll this past winter."
The online courses run parallel to SUNY Canton's traditional on-campus Summer Session courses. This year, Brown and Graveline implemented an on-campus housing waiver, which offers free room and board for students during the summer months.
"We still have waivers available for our second and third summer sessions," noted Graveline.
In order to be eligible for the housing waivers, students must register for six credit hours or more during the summer sessions, with at least three credit hours in an on-campus course. The housing waiver will last for the duration of the student's on-campus summer enrollment.
The second session of SUNY Canton's summer courses, both online and in-house begins this week. For more information, please contact the Student Service Center at 386-7616, 800-388-7123, or finaid@canton.edu. A complete listing of courses is available at www.canton.edu/summer_school.
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 26 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 10 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. The College has recently embarked upon articulation agreements with Lomonosov Moscow State University and Osaka College of Foreign Languages and International Business in Japan, allowing international scholars the ability to obtain a SUNY Canton degree locally or abroad.
