SUNY Canton's Global Classroom Expands to Ukraine

Small logo SUNY Canton's global classroom became larger with the recent agreement created with Kherson State University in Ukraine.

"Kherson State students can now enter into our signature Bachelor of Business Administration in Technology Management program offered by the SUNY Canton School of Business and Public Service," said Provost Jeremy D. Brown. "Our agreement with Kherson State is similar to the existing online educational avenues we have in place for students at Lomonosov State University in Moscow and Osaka College of Foreign Languages in Japan. All three international offerings are integral to our goal of expanding SUNY Canton's global classroom. Planet Canton just got a little bit bigger."

Students will begin studying toward their bachelor's degree at Kherson State in a corresponding program. After two years they will then begin taking SUNY Canton online courses, according to Brown.

School of Liberal Studies and Support Services Dean Pauline A. Graveline helped design the agreement tailored for the needs of students in Ukraine. She said some Kherson State students will begin auditing a class during the upcoming Spring 2007 semester and start program-specific online classes next fall.

"Our global classroom is a source of pride at SUNY Canton," said Graveline. "It offers the very unique opportunity to sit in a virtual classroom with students from different regions and different cultures, which is not an everyday occurrence."

Graveline and Brown recently returned from Ukraine, where they signed the agreement with Kherson State officials. Dr. Brown was invited to address the incoming students at Kherson State University during their opening convocation ceremony. Brown later gave a presentation on SUNY Canton and the online programs to be offered at Kherson State. His presentation was attended by more than 180 students from the school of Economics and Law.

The first steps in joining the two universities were realized when Kherson State University Vice Rector Alexander Spivakovsky visited Upstate New York through Professor of Psychology John Nixon's grant-driven Ukrainian studies program. More recently, Deans and other Kherson State officials visited the North Country to create the foundation of the program.

SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 22 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 12 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
