Ukrainian College Official Visits SUNY Canton

SUNY Canton officials have announced continued progress toward a dual-degree program with Kherson State University in Ukraine. The agreement would become the second of its kind with a university in the former Soviet Republic.
Recently, Kherson State University Vice Rector Alexander Spivakovsky traveled from Ukraine to meet with SUNY Canton officials to discuss the implementation of an online program offering Kherson State Students the ability to receive a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree. Among those representing SUNY Canton were President Joseph L. Kennedy, Provost Jeremy D. Brown, School of Liberal Arts and Support Services Dean Pauline Graveline, and School of Business and Public Service Dean Dr. Jonathan Gueverra.
"This dual-degree program is very similar to the one we have in place with Moscow State University, where students can simultaneously earn baccalaureate degrees in Financial Services from SUNY Canton and Mathematics from their own school," said Gueverra.
"We were very encouraged by Vice Rector Spivakovsky's enthusiasm for the curriculums we offer."
Spivakovsky said that the growing economy in Ukraine incubates a unique market for entrepreneurs and those leadership abilities. The online classes also broaden the international perspective for students in Ukraine and in Northern New York, as they discuss the topics delivered in SUNY Canton's Management, Financial Services, and Information Technology curriculums.
SUNY Canton Psychology Professor John T. Nixon has been corresponding with Spivakovsky for about four years. Nixon, who has been helping with the creation of small-business development classes in Ukraine, discussed the creation of the dual-degree program with Spivakovsky in the past. "These degrees and programs are very useful in the growing economy of Ukraine," Nixon said. "Alexander was very interested in creating a scholarly exchange. He is the one who will ultimately make the decision for Kherson State when we finalize the details of the agreement."
The agreement should be drafted in the upcoming year, with a Spring 2007 projected start date.
SUNY Canton will be marking its 100-year anniversary next year and has already begun celebrating with its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. The college is transitioning from a two-year to a four-year college. In addition to 25 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers eight four-year degrees with plans to double that number during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers a Masters of Business Administration in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica.
