Dr. David J. Wells Joins SUNY Canton
as Dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology
SUNY Canton Provost Dr. Jeremy D. Brown announced recently that Dr. David J. Wells has been hired as the Dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology.
"Dr. Wells brings a wealth of experience to SUNY Canton and will have an immediate impact on the continued success of our academic programs," said Dr. Jeremy D. Brown, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. "Dave demonstrates a clear understanding of SUNY Canton's strengths and its enormous potential. He will provide tremendous leadership for the Canino School of Engineering Technology's faculty and students."
Wells has worked in both industry and in education and has a penchant for creating new in-demand academic programs. He founded the Distribution and Logistics Engineering program at the University of Houston, and saw 100 percent of the program's graduates placed in the workforce. He also helped establish the Interdisciplinary Engineering and Management master's degree at Clarkson University, which became the leading program of its kind in the nation. Most recently, he directed the Engineering and Physics programs and oversaw the introduction of the Engineering Operations and Strategy Master's degree program at Wilkes University in Wilkes Barre, Pa.
"Many of the most noted leaders in science and industry commenced their careers with a solid hands-on understanding of their work environment," Wells said. "SUNY Canton does this exceptionally well and more with its emphases on communications, teamwork and leadership. This is why graduates of the Canino School of Engineering Technology have experienced such significant levels of growth and flexibility throughout their careers."
Dr. Arthur Hurlbut, who previously served as the Dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology, will be resuming his teaching career at the college. "I am honored to follow someone like Art, who not only knows the history of SUNY Canton but also has contributed greatly to the development and excellent reputation of the college," Wells said.
Wells will be overseeing the Canino School's four-year programs including Facilities Operation, Information Technology, the new four-year Alternative and Renewable Energies program, in addition to the school's associate degree and certificate programs. He said he sees potential for new programs and developing interdisciplinary studies with the SUNY Canton School of Business and Public Service. "The potential for students to develop their leadership and teamwork skills through the college's distance learning technologies can play a central role in their future success," Wells said.
Wells and his wife, Jane, reside in Potsdam. They have three children; Jacob of Middlebury Vermont, Abbe Theodore of Potsdam, and Anna Thomas of Colton.
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 23 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 10 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. The College has recently embarked upon articulation agreements with Lomonosov Moscow State University and Osaka College of Foreign Languages and International Business in Japan, allowing international scholars the ability to obtain a SUNY Canton degree locally or abroad.
