SUNY Canton Hosting "Women in Engineering Day"
SUNY Canton will be hosting a "Women in Engineering Day" for 250 female students in grades 6 to 12 on Thursday, May 25 at the college. The day is designed to expose students to a possible career in engineering.
"Women in Engineering Day" will include conversations with female engineers and current engineering technology faculty, engineering technology displays, related activities, and a Barbeque lunch.
"Research has shown that women are unrepresented in fields like engineering primarily because of a lack of encouragement to consider those career options," SUNY Canton Joseph L. Kennedy said. "We'll look to give them a better understanding of a career in engineering and the benefits and rewards that accompany the profession."
The Extraordinary Women Engineers Project (EWEP), a national initiative founded in 2004 to encourage girls to consider pursuing a career in engineering, has noted that girls react positively to personal and informational stories that tell more about the engineering lifestyle. The group also found that there is a gender divide in engineering due to the perception that it is a man's profession and there exists a lack of support for girls to consider engineering.
"The response to this program has been overwhelming," Director of Admissions Jodi Revill said. "We quickly filled up all of the available spots. It will be an informative and fun day that will be rewarding for the girls in attendance."
Students will be split into two tracks depending on grade level (grades 6 to 8 and grades 9 to 12). There will be an optional campus tour from 1 to1:45 p.m.
SUNY Canton is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year and is in the midst of its highly successful SUNY Canton Centennial Campaign: Cultivating the Minds of Tomorrow. In addition to 25 associate degree programs, SUNY Canton currently offers 10 four-year degrees with plans to announce several other new programs during the next academic year. SUNY Canton also offers three unique master's degrees in conjunction with SUNYIT, Utica. The College has recently embarked upon articulation agreements with Lomonosov Moscow State University and Osaka College of Foreign Languages and International Business in Japan, allowing international scholars the ability to obtain a SUNY Canton degree locally or abroad.
